By soul music I mean 60's and 70's soul and funk, generally speaking; all the websites I've found rave(!) about the electronic music scene, or talk of the classical concerts, or inform about the folk music.
But there are also several eclectic crowds that like rock, disco music, etc. If it were me, the best thing would be to bring along your CDs and try a gig at a club one night and see what the turnout is like.

Absolutely and without question, this is probably the best book about soul music I have ever had the pleasure to read.
The music coming out of Chicago, Detroit and Philadelphia are not even afforded a footnote.
Although restricted to this 'Southern' strand the research into it is so thorough, the story so well told, that it would have been impossible to cover all aspects of soul music in such fine detail.
