Soulfly - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
Soulfly is the metal band started by Max Cavalera in 1997 after his decision to leave Sepultura.
I never wanted Soulfly to be a band like Metallica, with the same four guys.
Prophecy was released on March 30, 2004 and as at April of that year had reached a peak of number 82 on the Billboard 200 although it has reached the top 50 of the Australian album charts.

InternetEd Reviews: Soulfly- 3   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
As the name clearly states, this is Soulfly’s third record, and it is a logical continuation of the hardcore/thrash/groove sound accompanied by trademark world music elements that were heard on previous records.
Not surprisingly then, Soulfly’s 3 is more cohesive and tight musically than Primitive was, and it conjures up memories of vocalist/songwriter/guitarist Max Cavalera’s work with Sepultura.
Unlike Soulfly’s mostly mid-pace self-titled debut and the groove-laden Primitive, this record has many songs played at breakneck speed with a thrash feel to them.

Soulfly: 3 - PopMatters Music Review
Soulfly is simply at its most thrilling when the go full-bore into the Brazilian metal territory, and "Brasil" is a phenomenal example.
In a flash of simple brilliance, Soulfly's one tribute to "9-11-01" is nothing more than a full minute of complete silence, which, coming from such a loud album, is a real shock, and is most fitting (though Cavalera had better hope that John Cage doesn't sue).
Soulfly's journey through both world and metal music is getting closer and closer to the great album they're capable of; when Max Cavalera completely embraces that exciting combination of musical styles, and stretches it out for an entire album, the result could really break new ground in the nu-metal genre.

With their third album, Soulfly is totally on track in terms of unleashing an awesome and essential spate of songs.
Max has always been the figurehead of the band (he is, after all, the singer, lyricist, main songwriter, and guitarist) yet Soulfly 3 marks the first time that he has stepped behind the boards, adding the role of producer to his list of achievements.
Whether I'm touching upon the delicate sound of “Soulfly 3” or I'm touching the brutal fuck you attitude of “Call to Arms” the most important thing is that I am being very true to the very last drop of each song.

For those of you not familiar with Soulfly, the band was started shortly after the lead singer (Max Cavalera)'s departure from one of the pioneering heavy metal bands Sepultura.
On the back cover of Soulfly 3 it says "dedicated to god" and under that is a picture of a cross with rays of light coming from it.
I respect Soulfly even more because of this, it takes real courage to be an open supporter of christianity in the heavy metal business.

 Inside Metal
Soulfly wanted this album to be special, for the reason of Max's passion for 3rd albums, hence the title '3'.
There are only about 3 or 4 songs that have guest appearances, they are: 'One' with Christian Machado from Ill Niño, 'Tree Of Pain' with Hip Hop singer Asha Rabouin, 'One Nation' with guest drummer Greg Hall and guest guitarist Wiley Arnett.
Also available is the '3' digipack, it features 4 bonus tracks, 'I Will Refuse', 'Under The Sun' (cover of Black Sabbath classic), 'Eye For An Eye' (Live at Ozzfest 2000) and Pain (Live at Ozzfest 2000).

 Rough Edge: Soulfly CD Reviews
Soulfly's third album, simply entitled "3," experiments with new melodies and acoustics, while remaining faithful to the band's roots of high energy and rage.
One of the most unexpected and interesting aspects of "3," is a track entitled "9-11-2001 (one minute of silence)." Max felt that silence was the purest form to display his respect, as an artist, to the atrocity of 9/11.
This is the 1998 debut release of the band and, if their later stuff continues to be as good as this recording, Soulfly will be a voice to be reckoned with in the metal future.

While "Soulfly 3" sees the band branching out into more experimental sonic terrain, especially in terms of composition, it also sees the band returning to their roots.
Unlike "Primitive", which was loaded with high profile guest appearances, "Soulfly 3" sticks pretty much to the core quartet of Soulfly.

Absolut Metal album review - Soulfly - 3   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
I've been waiting for Max to pull one out of his hat and put out an album that knocks me off my ass, but that hasn't happened yet...he seemed to be kind of chasing his tail in circles with Soulfly, it was getting old.
Soulfly's 3rd album does have some badass possibilities, but a few of them just veer off into the wrong direction and end up sounding like a train wreck.
At about 3:08 in "One Nation" there's some really cool acoustic guitar, but it just doesn't seem to fit there, and "Tree Of Pain" is a giant clusterfuck...you can't say that the man doesn't try to push boundries and experiment, but it just doesn't seem to turn out right.

ॐ (Album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ॐ was the third LP by thrash metal band Soulfly released in 2002 (2002 in music) through Roadrunner Records.
The album takes it's title from the symbol ॐ (pronounced om or aum) which is sacred to many religions and a recurring theme in many spiritual and meditative mantras.
ॐ is considered to be a primal sound, which offers a link to Soulfly's previous album title, Primitive.

 Plan 9's Nine Times
This is the second time Cavalera has released a third album; the first time was in 1989 with his first band Sepultura and their Beneath the Remains and now with his new band Soulfly and their latest offering, titled simply 3.
Simplicity is a key concept with 3, coming on the heels of the star-studded Primitive two years ago.
Perhaps the most significant is the renewed sense of Soulfly—Cavalera, guitarist Mike Doling, and bassist Marcello D. Rapp—as a real band with the return of drummer Roy Mayorga, who left Soulfly for a variety of personal and professional reasons after the release of the band’s eponymous debut in 1998.

Like the last song, which only remotely sounds like the stuff we know (like the use of some tribal sounds in the background), but the rest of the song is actually very relaxed, just a tune for background listening.
But it does show how Soulfly are experimenting along the way and are not too afraid to put new things on record.

Neville Garrick, who designed the artwork for PRIMITIVE, provides the masterful photographic artwork and design depicted throughout "3", the latest Soulfly album, illustrated on the front cover by a Hindu symbol that Max explains to mean literally "Sound of the Universe".
Soulfly gives thanks to countless names across two of the 16 full-colour cd booklet panels that exhibit breath-taking photography illustrating relationships between Nature, Humanity, and the sense of God that connects all of it, including the music, together.

3 sees Max return to the cutting edge metal that made his name in the 90s.
Soulfly was an exelent debut, Primitive was a very impressive follow up, but "3" is the ULTIMATE soulfly album.I cant belive how good it is! It opens with "Downstroy", an amazing and powerful song.
Keep listening and you get to "one" and good (its only fault is to collide with nu-metal a bit instead of sticking with Maxs Sepultura orgins) "one nation" is also a great song but by far my favourate song is "tree of pain" which is true amazing, powerful song.
