Mixing & Recording Glossary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
In sound mixers, assign means to switch or route a signal to a particular signal path or combination of signal paths.
Sound waves and the electrical signals that represent sound waves in an audio circuit have repetitive patterns that range from a frequency of about 20 repetitions per second to about 20,000 repetitions per second.
Sound is the vibration or combination of vibrations in this range of 20 to 20,000 repetitions per second, which gives us the sensation of pitch, harmonics, tone and overtones.

 Audio mixing Summary
Sound mixing and recording is the process by which music is recorded and prepared for release.
A typical concert has two mixers, one located in the audience to mix the front of house speakers heard by the audience, and the other is located at the side of the stage, mixing for the monitor speakers positioned directly in front of the performers so that they can hear one another.
An audio mixing console, or mixing desk, or mixing board, has numerous rotating controls (potentiometers) and sliding controls (faders which are also potentiometers) that are used to manipulate the volume, the addition of effects such as reverb, and frequency content (equalization) of audio signals.

 Sound for Film
Sound track rolls are designated according to the type of sound each contains, i.e., narration, sync sound, sound effects, music, or presence.
Photographic sound negatives (variable area) are processed to a particular gamma and density to provide minimum cross modulation distortion when printed to a certain positive aim density.
You must be sure, when ordering photographic sound negatives or positives, that you specify the correct type for the intended use, and that in 16mm, you specify the correct emulsion position, or "wind," to match the wind of the picture material it will be printed with.

 Mixing Desks
High-end mixing desks can appear with four parametric equalizer bands which allow frequency selection, boost/cut control, and a bandwidth control (where the center frequency is the frequency selected with the frequency knob), as well as a high-cut filter (a low-pass filter) and a low-cut filter (a high-pass filter).
Mixing desks can have anywhere from two to sixteen subgroups-- technically, a mixing desk with stereo outputs can be thought of having two groups, because the engineer is not required to run the mixing desk into a stereo pair.
The pre-fade mix acts independently of the fader position, so even if the orchestra faders are down (off) in the house system, the loudspeaker system (called the foldback system) on stage is still receiving the signal, so the performers can always hear what they need to hear.

Mixing consoles should be located on the main level of the seating area as close to the center of the area as practical.
While being near the rear wall of the room discolors the sound somewhat, it is most suitable for the worship experience if the mixing equipment is located near the center of the room at the farthermost listening position.
This information is directed at live sound mixing only and does not apply to recording situations where it is important for the mixing console and operator to be located in a fully enclosed, sound proof room.

  Soundtrack Intro
Most sound editors and studios maintain and compile their own elaborate libraries of sound effects, built up over the years from all of the films they have worked on as well as by swapping with fellow editors.
To replace bad original sound, all the editor would have to do is put the three elements in a gang synchronizer on his editing bench, roll down to the first cut point, and splice in his track.
Sounds of very short duration are merely erased from the track by mechanically removing some of the magnetic oxide emulsion with a razor blade, sandpaper, or cleaning solvent.

Mixing dialog is very tedious and the benefits are seldomly noticeable.
Using good quality monitoring speakers really helps when mixing because you need to hear just how loud or quite to make stuff like the rustling sound the actor’s corduroy pants made when walking to the door in scene 18.
Sound effects help these type of ‘cheats.’ Make the sound of the quarter dropping into the slot and the buttons being pushed louder and all will sound right.

Mixing On Headphones   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
When listening to a loudspeaker, its direct sound inherently arrives at both ears, and if the speaker is positioned off to one side (consider the left-hand speaker in a stereo pair, for example), then its sound will reach the closer ear slightly earlier than it reaches the more distant one.
The source of sound is very close to the ear; you may be tempted to monitor at elevated levels to minimise the intrusion of external ambient noise; and you will not feel the physical effects of high sound levels which may, in turn, subconsciously encourage you to turn the level up even more.
When mixing you will be wearing the headphones for considerable periods of time, so it is worthwhile taking the trouble to wear the various models selected for your short list for a reasonable period of time, to get a true impression of what they will be like to work with.

When striving for the perfect mix, knowing the frequency characteristics of the instrument(s) to be reinforced and your mixer's tone controls greatly helps.
Directional response describes how an instrument produces the sounds you hear and where it generates the different tones that make up the whole sound of the instrument.
It is important to know what frequencies are vital to the sound of an instrument so the proper tone control is adjusted.

Most of the time, the sound image from such setups is washed out stereo, the image being best at a "sweet spot" on stage, which degrades if the performer moves around.
Sound waves from loudspeakers interact with each other (interchannel crosstalk), with wall reflections and with the listener's head before they reach the ears.
While many of the same techniques for making headphones sound more natural to musicians are easily adapted to recording engineers, the importance of having a close correlation between headphone and loudspeaker sound demands careful selection of headphone equipment and application of techniques.

Surround Sound Mixing Techniques - Article at Scott R. Garrigus' DigiFreq
Of course, movie soundtracks have been using surround sound for years, but the basic formula is pretty straightforward: dialog in the center, music in the front left and right, suround effects in the rear, low-frequency effects (explosions, earthquakes, and so forth) in the subwoofer.
Move the pan pot to the right, and the apparent sound source shifts to the right because that sound's level is greater in the right speaker.
In either case, the sound field in the surround speakers is particularly effective because these speakers are frequently positioned to the sides of and just behind the listener, sort of like oversize headphones.

The PCM sound data used by the GBA's sound chip is stored as a stream of signed binary numbers, and is the same as a normal.wav file on your computer.
Beware though, if you try to loop a sound using this method, you can get clicks because the DMA transfers 16 bytes at a time, so the length of your sound must be a multiple of 16.
