The Sound of Jura is a waterway in Scotland near the Western end of the Crinan Canal.
The 'Sound of Jura' was purchased by the newly formed Southern Whaling & Sealing Co. in 1911, to provide a role as a cargo transporter, and was probably chosen, as her design enabled her to transport bulk whale oil and other provisions for the proposed whaling operations.
Sound of Jura then took on a new role as a transporter to the Kerguelen Islands, which she fulfilled until 1927.

The whole of the Sound of Jura is a tidal anomaly.
The steep east face of the pinnacle forces a massive upthrust of water to surface in pulses which are then swept away westward by the tidal flow and these dissipate into vortices or whirlpools.
jura is close by and gemini can take you from crinan to ardlussa, to the north end of the island, or just a few hours cruising and including the gulf of corryvreckan whirlpools.

This is the Sound of Islay, she was the wonderer of the fleet but at the end she was used to run from McInroy's Point (Gourock) to McAlpines rig yard at (Toward).
This is the first Sound of Sanda, this is a picture of her before she was converted for work with Weastern Ferries back in the 70's.

Once the tide turned they were swept through the Sound of Jura and on into the Sound of Luing, where they finally picked up some breeze.
It is the same for all the crews, rowing between patches of wind and to hold position until the tide turns.
Simply Red were sighted third in the Sound of Jura, but it is just possible other yachts have taken a different course and gone outside the island into the Irish Sea, so positions could change.

There is no mobile phone or VHF coverage in the Sound so I've no way of getting in touch with Clyde Coastguard for a forecast update - a situation resolved by the passing Cal Mac ferry who very kindly responded to my contact and gave us an update on the weather.
Friday saw us heading on through the Sound, against the tide again, with a lunch stop on Islay and a visit to the hotel at Port Askaig (would you believe - is this a pub crawl?) for refreshment.
Mobiles are not reliable in the Sound of Islay but generally ok (Vodaphone) on the outside of Jura, but not up into Loch Tarbert itself unless you get to high ground.

I think it was at about this time that a definite decision was made to capitalise on both the improving weather and the ground already gained by heading west and not returning to Craobh for the middle weekend.
Friday morning produced the last rain for weeks (if not for the whole summer!) and also a bank of self-generating sea fog, which came rolling in from the immediate south-west and led to the fragmentation of the fleet for a few days for reasons which are as follows...
The expected rock-dodging never really materialised but the Ferry proved to be a charming place, with tomatoes growing in the phone box and a horse making the crossing to Mull in a contraption (the ferry) which is basically a landing craft pushed by a motor boat.
