Despite the international fame of the Trapp Family Singers, it is curious that in passively accepting and in capitalizing on The Sound of Music, Austria also accepts an officially disavowed regime (labeled in the film as “golden years”) and an elitist (aristocratic) representation of the nation.
The Sound of Music manages to represent most levels of the social structure, and does not shy from the bourgeois opportunism of Max Detweiler (Richard Haydn), the impresario, who is closely associated with the decadence of the Baroness and whose passive fatalism about Austria's demise angers the patriotic Captain von Trapp.
