  Soundfonts
Soundfonts are files that you can use in order to play MIDI music in a better quality at the computer.
Soundfonts not only use the often limited RAM of a sound card, but also the normal memory of the computer.
My soundfont, however, is not only suitable for Descent 1 and 2, but for all other games that support the General MIDI standard.

 SoundFont Information
SoundFont collectively refers to a file format and associated technology designed to bridge the gap between recorded and synthesized audio, especially for the purposes of computer music composition.
SoundFonts are tightly integrated with MIDI devices and can be seamlessly used in place of GM patches in many computer music sequencers.
The sound quality of SoundFont banks is generally regarded as superior to standard GM banks, and many SoundFont banks have been created specifically to replace GM banks with samples of each corresponding instrument.

Midi Contest and Midi Original Archives, Soundfont Tutorial
When you download a soundfont from the Midifont page on this website (or from another page on the web), almost always you will find that the soundfont you are downloading is in a "compressed" format.
What this means is that whoever posted the font file to the web page has shrunk (compressed) the size of the file so that it takes up less space on the web page and so that it doesnt require as much time to download when someone downloads the font to their hard drive.
Now when you download a soundfont from this website (or from some other page on the web) that has been compressed with the sfArk program, all you have to do is doubleclick that file in the directory where you keep your downloaded COMPRESSED soundfonts.

SoundFont technology is a sample format that was invented by E-MU / ENSONIQ for the purpose of creating a flexible wavetable synthesis solution for Creative Labs.
You can use SoundFont technology to enhance the sound in a game or use it as a number of musical instruments to create a sequence that would sound as if an orchestra was playing your original music in your computer.
SoundFont technology is a powerful tool that has already been deployed to the masses.

SoundFont banks require a synthesizer or sampler (used as an engine) for playback and software to load them into the instrument and to edit them.

3DsoundSurge Reviews: Utopia Live! Soundfont for the Sound Blaster Live!
Apparently, most free soundfonts on the net are made from instruments 'ripped' from other soundfonts resulting in most soundfonts having a lot of the same instruments/percussion.
After half a year of work the Utopia Sound Division basically had the soundfont finished but after that they (with the help of a large group of beta-testers) spend another half year just on balancing (which is: getting correct loudness levels, tweaking sounds etc..) to ensure as best as possible playback on Roland-made MIDI files.
soundfont was being developed, having nearly all combinations of instruments sound good was the priority with the 'reality of the individual sounds' for solos still important, but secondary to the big picture.

 GusSoundfont - ALSA wiki
For midi players that understand both Soundfonts and GUS patches, it would be convenient to have a unified config file syntax that characterizes intruments and banks in the same way for GUS and Sf2.
Instruments and percussion banks are named in Soundfonts, but the names often have troublesome characters in them, so unsf fixes up the names before using them as names of files and directories.
The downside to this way of configuring Soundfonts for use is that you have to declare in the config file the banks and instruments you want, otherwise they won't be loaded.
