SoundSpel is based on "General American" as put forward by a combination of the pronunciations shown in the 1980 "Oxford American" and the 1969 "Random House" dictionaries.
SoundSpel endeavors to retain as much of the regularity of Ripman's New Spelling as is possible without excessively offending present T.O. readers.
SoundSpel is fully adaptable to computers and word processors without change of any kind and without involving additional use of shift keys, etc. The use of all keys is somewhat more evenly spread than at present; the occurrence of 'e', for example, is reduced 9% and that of j and z are tripled.

Soundspel is quite close to the dictionary key in the 1990 Oxford American Dictionary.
Today’s SoundSpel is intended to put English spelling in the same class as languages whose spellings are learned without significant difficulty.
SoundSpel, then, is close enough to the sound of words to be learned easily by children, yet close enough to traditional spelling to be read by present readers after a few lines of practice.

The American Literacy Council's Soundspel is the latest version of Alexander Ellis' anglo-centric notation which was later called New Spelling.
It uses the traditional 26-letters and achieves a spelling close enough to the sound of carefully spoken words to be learned by children as readily as the i/t/a.
Achieving that goal has required a compromise with Utopia, to wit: SoundSpel retains a few short, high frequency, illogically spelled words: of, the, as, to, was, do, etc. These have to be learned as logograms or sight words rather than as phonograms or a string of sound-signs.

The ALC has invented a reading method that uses a phonetic spelling system (SoundSpel) to facilitate the learning of unfamiliar words in print.
In this system, each word of text is rewritten beneath the original word using this phonetic system, which eliminates the ambiguity of vowel pronunciation and confusing consonants by rewriting the same sound in the same way no matter the original word.
