Sound-on-film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sound-on-film refers to a class of sound film processes where the sound accompanying picture is physically recorded onto photographic film, usually, but not always, the same strip of film carrying the picture.
The most prevalent modern method of recording sound on a film print is by stereo variable-area (SVA) recording, encoding a two-channel audio signal as a pair of lines running parallel with the film's direction of travel through the projector.
Earlier processes, used on 70mm film prints and special presentations of 35mm film prints, recorded sound magnetically on ferric oxide tracks bonded to the film print, outside the sprocket holes.

Sound film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sound on film — In 1923, Lee De Forest produced the first commercially distributed "De Forest Phonofilms", where the sound track was photographically recorded and printed on to the side of the strip of motion picture film, making it almost impossible for the sound and picture to go out of synchronization.
The film, though made with the phonograph-based Vitaphone system, featured synchronized score and source music, sound effects, and was edited with cutaways during the synchronized musical sequences.
The transition from silent to sound films can be seen as one of the first examples of technological network effect.

Sound Stage - The History of Motion Picture Sound
While it was his optical recording of sound on film in 1922 that was the first successful demonstration of talking pictures, it would be sound recorded on synchronized records that provided the impetus for the film industry to abandon silent pictures forever.
De Forest, himself, was the first to successfully record sound on motion picture film in a process he called "Phonofilm".
However, the accumulated inventions of Lee De Forest (left), including the "Audion" tube which allowed amplification of electrical signals, were key to the development of both sound on film and sound on disc systems.

MIC Preservation Portal: Preserving Motion Picture Sound
If the sound playback head was installed at this location, the interruption in the film’s movement would yield an unacceptable “staccato” like sound.) Thus the sound is said to be “advanced” from the picture, and this sync relationship is established at the laboratory when the print is made.
Sound was recorded on print film, which was then printed on the same print film as the picture.
This is often the result of film damage, causing a loss of picture, soundtrack, or a version problem where the picture and sound are from different sets, for example, a theatrical version and a television version.
