Which only goes to show that Soundgarden are not funny, a fact that they thankfully remember for the remainder of this dirty, hard-hitting grungefest.
The funny, punkish "Full On Kevin's Mom" also shows Soundgarden starting to get the hang of this irony thing, but the band are definitely at their best when showing their more serious side.
Of course, the album is far from perfect, as not every song here is top shelf and (as previously mentioned) the band fails to maintain their momentum for the duration of several songs.

Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil once said the band aspired to be "Black Sabbath, without the parts that sucked." If that was indeed the goal of the four individuals who made up the Seattle band, with Badmotorfinger, they certainly succeeded.
Soundgarden was a bastard child of punk and metal - not fully accepted in either culture.
Soundgarden's skill as songwriters is mostly buried under layers of guitars on Badmotorfinger, surfacing occasionally on tracks such as the anthemic "Outshined" and "Mind Riot."

Seems like Soundgarden had SOME sence of humor to me, at least, as evident by the "665-667" (making fun of satanic bands putting "messages" in their songs), and the "Cover" of "One minute of Silence" (the "Heavy metal version" they say..)..
Mudhoney kicks Soundgarden right off the sidewalk any day of the week, so be louder than love all ya want...yer still only small fires in the grand scheme 'o riff things.
Looking back to the time when Soundgarden broke up, about three months after I bought this album, I can't believe some Rolling Stone Magazine guy somehow implied that this album is "grunge for grown ups"- this being a negative thing.

Soundgarden, arguably the most important band of the late 80s/early 90s Seattle music scene, first formed in 1984, but the roots of the band can be traced all the way over the Park Forest, Illinois in 1981.
His early Soundgarden writing (he wrote almost all of the first SG tunes), while not as complex as Cornell's songwriting, is full of great riffing and creative solos.
Heretic is the only Soundgarden song not available on one of the studio albums, but it's a great song, and the rest of the album is essential listening for anyone who claims to know anything about the Seattle scene.

Before Soundgarden exploded with rest of the Seatle scene on the breakthrough album, "Superunknown," they got a massive headstart with "Badmotorfinger." Recorded and released in 1991, "Badmotorfinger" not only stands the test of time as an album that still sounds fresh and original, but is also arguably the group's best work.
Soundgarden were pretty much the only band that knew how to fuse metal and classic rock influences with the grunge sound of the 90's and do it right.
"Badmotorfinger" may not be the best album for a new Soundgarden fan to pick up, as the sound explored here doesn't apply to their most popular work, but anyone who has given this and the rest of the Soundgarden discography a listen can't deny that it's a force to be reckoned with.
