Home Recording dot com BBS - Know of a good soundhole pickup for acoustic guitar?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Not only will a pick-up that goes in the soundhole not sound as good as a mic, most of them won't work on a nylon string guitar, except to pickup the strings that are metal wound.
The soundhole pickups out there are magnet based, and even the "humbucker" ones are also fairly noisy in my experience.
Soundhole pickups can be relatively cheap, and most are easy to install.

Putting the soundhole in the side was the next logical step in getting more tone and volume to the player, while regaining more top wood to project sound.
When the soundholes are located in the sides, the builder has the advantage of starting with a smaller soundhole than may be nessasary.
This allows the player to alter the total soundhole area quickly and easily to fine tune the guitars' sound to suit his or her tastes, or the type of music being played.

Soundholes are semi-circular, and while centered on the soundboard, are still set behind the bridge and the end of the tailpiece.
The soundholes are an unusual squiggle shape that might be a reflection of the stonecarver's fancy, or might be an elaborate instrument (the carving on the tailpiece, and the knob accent on the pegbox hint at the latter).
The position of the soundholes also varied, from close to the tail, to far foward toward the neck, but most often they were fixed fairly close to the center of the soundboard laterally, and spaced more or less evenly between the strings and edge of the soundboard.

Quite honestly, I don’t think that the right spot was chosen for the soundhole, which is right in the middle of the acoustic I-beam.
Only that size of soundhole is but one means of controlling overall response of the guitar, Paul's Selmer example (sorry Paul, that's a red herring...it assumes all other factors are the same which they are not in Petit Bouche and Grand Bouche models) not withstanding.

 Acoustic Guitar Amplification
Soundhole pickups are based on the same technology as electric guitar pickups.
They detect the motion of the string directly over the pickup, which is usually mounted in the soundhole (or, on archtops, between the bridge and fingerboard by means of screws or a clamp).
Since they do not detect air or top vibrations, soundhole pickups are favored by players who use techniques like right-hand tapping and harmonic slapping that can generate undesirable tapping and squeaking noises that are sometimes excessively amplified by other transducers.

As with many other design features on my guitars, the soundhole inlay has gone through a series of transformations over the years.
As stated elsewhere, when I started in the mid 1970's a major influence was the guitars of Jean Larrivee, and a feature that set his instruments apart was his use of a classical style rosette around the soundhole.
These changes began a number of years ago with my headstock design, followed by the bridge and finally, in the past year the soundhole.

As for the large soundhole, there is an ongoing argument as to the effect it has on the sound.
Both arguments are probably right in that a larger soundhole on a given instrument does have an effect, but probably not on Rice's particular instrument due to the extended fingerboard.

A century later Agricolas Geige was regarded as anti~ quated by Praetorius, who reproduces one of the bridgeles,s ones with five strings, a rose and two C-shaped soundholes, and calls it an old fiddle; under Geige he gives the violins.

GuitarNuts.com - Review of Fishman Rare Earth Sound Hole Pickup
The Fishman Rare Earth pickups are magnetic pickups that mount in the soundhole of steel-string acoustic guitars.
The only control is a small lever switch mounted on the body of the pickup and reached by poking your finger into the soundhole between the edge of the soundhole and the low-e string.
Of course, if the reason you are using a soundhole pickup is to avoid modifying a valuable guitar, by all means use the jack as an inline jack – just be very careful about allowing it to inadvertently bang against the guitar during transport and storage.

 L. R. Baggs M1 Magnetic Acoustic Soundhole Pickup Guitar_Accessories Reviews 2004-11-18
Of course there are the advantages of all magnetic soundhole pickups: easily removable, feedback resistant, none of the "quack" that you get from the undersaddle designs.
I'm sure it has to do with the fact that it requires SOLID contact with the soundboard in order to achieve that acoustic sound, but it seems like they could come up with something whereby you could adjust the height and then "lock" it into place with a screw or something.
It hasn't been a problem for me personally, but i've read about guitar models where this has been an issue (with MANY soundhole pickups; to be fair).
