ADF in the Area - Asian Dub Foundation > Who are ADF?
Soundsystem is originally a term from reggae and it goes way back to the late 60's Jamaica.
It's this and the culture of outdoor soundsystems that have inspired them to start similar things using the music of their background, mixing it with lots of different other styles that they are into.
With the new album they've spent most of the spring on the road in Europe and are also scheduled for loads of festivals all over the world in summer 00.

RTE.ie Entertainment - Date set for LCD Soundsystem album
The long-awaited eponymous debut album from LCD Soundsystem is due to be released on 21 January.
LCD Soundsystem is the alter-ego of James Murphy, one half of New York production duo and label DFA, and the creator of such dancefloor favourites as 'Losing My Edge', 'Beat Connection' and 'Movement'.
Described as "a dance-rock party album full of dirty sounds and nasty grooves", LCD Soundsystem's debut is a double album featuring nine new tracks on one disc, with the second disc featuring the CD debuts of 'Losing My Edge', 'Beat Connection', 'Give It Up', 'Tired' and 'Yeah'.

Although I remember listening to this album briefly at a friends house when it was first released and didn’t care for it, I found this album to be simply amazing as all 311 albums are.
I highly recommend listening to this song before buying this album because it is one of the most upbeat songs that 311 has ever made and is great for when you are in a bad mood.
Soundsystem is one of the best examples of how 311 can make amazing songs and leave you in admiration.

Of course, I don't mean that in a bad way, like I said, this album is good, but there is an underlying sense of (for lack of a more fitting word) nostalgia throughout.
One problem with this album is that it isn't particularly coherent; it doesn't flow as well as you would like an album to.
Who cares if the album doesn't flow, it's a dance record (for the most part) and most of the songs here would tear up the dance floor, so in that respect fuck it.

 Soundsystem - CLEAN by 311
Benefiting from Padgham's professional skills, Soundsystem is a tighter record, clocking in at 45 minutes.
This may be at the expense of a pop hook, but it does give them identity, and -- in a weird way -- musical integrity, since their ever-shifting musical gears are clearly the result of a band intent on pleasing themselves and their hardcore audience, not a pop market.
But that additional focus and punch makes it their best album since 311, a fact their hardcore fans will appreciate.

The single is one of the album's standout tracks, marrying a huge throbbing bassline groove to a sonic rush of a rock song.
With groups like LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, Chicks On Speed, Le Tigre, Liars, Radio 4 and other contemporary punk/dance bands taking their influences from this period, the music of these groups (all of whom have remained unknown outside of Brasil until now) will be a revelation.
The title from the album relates to the complicated relationship Brazilian musicians have with the music of the US and their ironic perception of how Brazilian music is seen outside the country.

 Different Drummer : Al-Haca Soundsystem
Al-Haca Soundsystem follow up their Killa EP (released in 2001 on Different Drummer, supported by Coldcut and Fila Brazillia) with their long-awaited debut album "Inevitable".
The vocals are supplied by a host of talent from around the world; Different Drummer Soundsystem's MC Tweed and Farda P provide some super-deep mythical narratives, whilst the lyric-spitting Jamaican Ragga style of Sizzla sits comfortably next to the street-poetry MCing style of New York shape-shifter RQM.
This is an album that takes it's influences from a wide variety of sounds but manages to create a distinctly new listening experience.

LCD Soundsystem: LCD Soundsystem (2005): Reviews
It's a classic case of debut album as faux anthology of musical influences, but it's also a successful collection with a marked sense of individuality, massively helped by Murphy's dry sense of humor, which demonstrates a willingness to embrace the contradiction at the heart of his musical personality.
In some ways, the release is validated almost completely by the inclusion of a bonus disc that includes all previous singles from LCD Soundsystem, most of which feel more thought-out and slamming than much of what resides on the album itself.
LCD Soundsystem is mostly too afraid to be balls-out fun, but too unambitious to make for a really rewarding artistic experience.

LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem - Stylus Magazine
Apart from that, the only track here to have been officially released is the album’s lead single “Movement”—a drum-machine propelled no-wave anthem that perfects the Mark E. Smith-isms that Murphy first tried out on Felix da Housecat’s “What She Wants,” and marks the group’s first a-side to totally break from discopunk.
Still, the album manages to throw a pair of genuine curveballs, songs totally out of the realm of anything the group (or their famous production team, for that matter) have done before.
With this bonus disc in place, LCD Soundsystem are officially the first of the genre’s hype acts to not disappoint with their breakthrough effort in the slightest.

LCD Soundsystem could be the one to succeed; dance floors have already been shaken by, one half of the infamous New York production duo/label DFA, James Murphy’s bitter, hilarious ‘Losing My Edge’, the thunderous acid house of ‘Yeah’ and the raucous party anthem ‘Daft Punk Is Playing at My House’, all three included here.
The album is impressively broad in scope, brave and curious explorations of styles and genres.
It is a natural closer to the second CD and the album as a whole, resplendent with its “HaHaHaHa” refrain- a natural sardonic successor to the epic tracks it follows.

LCD Soundsystem Review by Terrence, American Buddhist : usounds: le internacional
The regular album starts out with "Daft Punk is Playing at My House," a rather boastful track it would seem, but since I'm also close with Daft Punk (through emails we trade bits of wisdom) I let it pass.
This song is a good intro to the sound of the album, as it has rock n roll, dance beats, fun lyrics, and various bells.
LCD Soundsystem do not put their robes on at the sound of a bell, they take them off and dance naked around the room, shrieking and banging more bells, and adding keyboards, guitars, and pretty much anything else that can make a good sound.

Club-worthy 'Soundsystem' lacks cohesion - The Daily Cardinal - Arts   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The album often sounds like a collection of singles that are shorter, more intense versions of the climactic earlier singles.
Elsewhere on the album, Murphy heavily recalls Mark E. Smith's delivery and a dead-on Fall impression with the single "Movement." Murphy's half-sung lyrics lead the relentless handclaps and dirty bass line to the explosive, noisy chorus.
The LCD Soundsystem album will not keep your body moving for the full length of the new disc, but the fierce moments are enough to make you bob your head long enough to forget the occasional missteps.

CD Baby: BOOGIEWALL SOUNDSYSTEM: Super My Own Band
Boogiewall Soundsystem is a music collective with a deep dub consciousness that bridges pop, electronic music and reggae with their signature style: strong songwriting and beautiful vocals couched in warm, textured rhythms.
The Boogiewall Soundsystem function more as a collective than a normal band, seeking out collaborations with DJs and dance music producers as well as MCs and horn sections. This disc features remixes by UK dub hero the Mad Professor and a house mix by local boy Rob Nice.
From full band reggae and ska to down-tempo studio dub, the debut album from Toronto's Boogiewall Soundsystem, 'Super My Own Band" is an ambitious and satisfying endeavor that finds vocalist Tanya Kornobis and crew unbacked by the power of their recent mad professor remix but still indexing Morcheeba or Massive Attack.

The rest of this album (the other 12 songs) are all relentlessly boring, too long (the main genre problem-techno music has always been too tedious for my taste), and amazingly uninspired.
While LCD Soundsystem obviously wear their influences on their sleeves ( fans of artists like Wire, Can, Gang of Four and Brian Eno will spot them) they could have certainly picked worse artists to be influenced by.
On the one hand, this is a good album but it's far from a contender for "album of the year." It's probably not even the best example of this kind of music to come out in early 2005.

I've had this album for about 5 and a half years now, and I still listen to the album like I picked it up yesterday.
S.A. has helped us out with that problem through this album's lyrics; "dancehall," "punk guitars," "funk-slap bass," and "the mics in their hands." This is easily my favorite of the band's albums.
"Soundsystem" suffers in the same way as 311's other work, namely a few very strong songs and an equal amount of filler, but the four opening tracks could be the band's legacy.

Guardian | LCD Soundsystem, LCD Soundsystem
James Murphy - the man behind LCD Soundsystem - isn't cool by design: in interviews he dismisses himself as a shambling geek.
Daft Punk Is Playing at My House, the first track on his debut album, is at once a challenge to anyone who thinks they can better Murphy in the dance-rock game and an admission that such behaviour is juvenile.
Perhaps Murphy thought that an album of tracks as all-consuming as Disco Infiltrator and Daft Punk would have been too exhausting.

When they left after the sound system was broken up during the turbulent 1980 Jamaican election, it was rebuilt with new DJs Charlie Chaplin and Josey Wales, and Inspector Willie as selector.
U-Roy continued to record sporadically throughout the 80s, recording "Hustling", a single for Gussie Clarke, in 1984, and two excellent albums for DJs-turned-producers Tapper Zukie and Prince Jazzbo, in 1986 and 1987, respectively.

With file-sharing networks, the idea that a record is only heard after its official release date is of course laughable, yet it still feels weird to think that, here in January 2005, the self-titled debut by LCD Soundsystem will be the best album of the year.
