ABC Television: Program summary - The Big Picture: Soundtrack To War:
Soundtrack to War is rock, rap and roll - music extracted from the madness of war.
To many soldiers, war is heavy metal - lyrics of 'Gore Metal' describe the hellfire ride; rap battles in 'the bullring' say it like it is. R&B speaks of lovers and longing, Country sings of letters home, ballads to flags and fallen friends, Gospel calls on the Almighty, and Baghdad's Bee Gees are digging underground.
Soundtrack to War showcases spontaneous music performances by a striking cast of the battle weary - performances made without rehearsal, under the blaring Iraqi sun, with the backdrop of a destroyed city, grit and dust, and the distraction of gunfire and bursting mortar shells.

Hart's War (Soundtrack) by Rachel Portman
As the film’s tagline reads, Hart’s War is a film that goes “Beyond Courage, Beyond Honor.” The film was misrepresented in its advertising campaign as a member of the action/thriller genre.
In fact, Hart’s War is a character study and a courtroom drama, combined with an escape (the objective of which is to send men to destroy a nearby ammunition factory).
This is unfortunate, since Hart’s War is a strong, intelligent film that goes beyond the conventional war picture, and explores the introspective dynamics of the soldiers who are not only imprisoned by the enemy, but by their own ambitions, morals, and obligations.

 Artsandentertainment: The songs of war
NEW YORK - The images captured in VH1 News Presents: Soundtrack To War combine the use of music by America's soldiers and the unsettling pictures of war.
Soundtrack To War, airing tonight, follows soldiers of the Army's 1st Armored Division during their 15-month deployment in Iraq, from April 2003 to July 2004, one of the military's longest deployments since Vietnam.
But unlike Moore's film, Soundtrack To War centers on the soldiers' personal feelings rather than their political ones.

Both majestic and somber, it paints the canvas of the score quite wide and serves as a primer for the rest of the proceedings.
Beyond that, Portman's "End Credits" are another album highlight, a briskly paced exercise for strings that surprisingly (and refreshingly) focuses on her secondary themes for the score.
Overall, Hart's War is just fine for what it is - a handsomely crafted and well-recorded score that no doubt serves its film wonderfully, but comes off a bit long in the tooth all by itself.

War of the Worlds culminates with "Escape from the Basket," in which Williams methodically builds tension over close to ten minutes.
"The War of the Worlds," Spielberg-style, is a riveting, gut-wrenching, wholly one-of-a-kind science fiction colossus that puts the viewer into the story and leaves him as clueless as the characters in the film -- no scientist to explain things, no kindly professor to assess what "probably" is happening and why, no other unrealistic explanatory device.
For War of the Worlds, John Williams reached for something not of this earth and composed a score that you feel on your skin, even before you become aware that you are actually hearing it.

Fox News's war theme was the tune I had previewed, but with more percussion and milder strings replacing the heavy guitar.
Within the first two weeks of war, music critics at The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Chicago Tribune wrote articles on the ideological impact of the TV news war music, respectively headlined "Media's war music carries a message and networks' theme music sanitizes war's darkest realities." The martial style of the music was criticized.
Indeed, the lack of music and sound effects in the war's first few days — in deference to the gravity of the situation — soon proved untenable (even unnatural) considering the modern viewer's expectations.

The war on terror has produced a glut of many things - fist-pumping protesters, blabbering Army generals (always "Ret.") and blathering Bush bashers.
The bulk of the boomers came of age to a 1960s soundtrack that was angry, rebellious and, in the case of the wildly popular Creedence Clearwater Revival, romantically barren and occasionally self-pitying.
When people of the World War II generation hear these songs they are often overcome with bittersweet emotion, sometimes to the point of tears.

Where Moore focused selectively on the more aggressive uses of music by US soldiers in Iraq, such as listening to heavy metal as they roll into battle, Gittoes's film offers a far more comprehensive overview of what music means to people on both sides of war.
Gittoes doesn't shy away from the soldiers' aggression but he also shows their fear, pain and confusion and how music becomes a coping mechanism.
There is no commentary - Gittoes lets his subjects speak and sing in their own words - and it could have been edited more tightly (the last 20 minutes or so start to feel repetitive).

IGN: God Of War Soundtrack Review
by Spence D. March 25, 2005 - As befitting an action/adventure game steeped in the fantastical realms of Greek mythology, the soundtrack to God Of War is teeming with sweeping epic orchestral compositions that swirl, stomp, and storm throughout the hour and 10-minute total running time.
Granted much of the music was created virtually (sans real orchestra and choir in favor of electronic manipulation), but all but the most trained of ears would be hard-pressed to distinguish between what is real and what is virtual.
The 34 tracks included on this bonus soundtrack disc run the gamut from storming militaristic cadences to hauntingly quiet percussive interludes.
