Flak Magazine: Trail of Dead's Source Tags & Codes, 02.28.02
Yet beneath this assault are strings, a cocky voice and cymbals that sound like they are being battered against a wall by gusts of wind — layers of sound that mix an adulation for the powerful wallop of a six-string with the careful orchestration of art rock.
Source Tags & Codes is a perfect record — that's right, a perfect record — that enthralls with wonderfully precise melodies and jars with explosions of noise.
ST&C really isn't all that different from Trail of Dead's two previous discs — a self-titled debut on Trance in 1998 and 1999's Madonna, on Merge — except for the recording quality.

In all places, though, "source tags and codes" is an album of contrasts, sort of like the "album you play to get your blood pumping" and the "album you play to mellow out" combined into one.
Source Tags and Codes caught the record buying public by surprise....it was a critical success but rather a commercial failure, which must have frustrated the band (and label!).
While Source Tags might be the crowd favorite for their fans, to me it sounds like a fair album with a few very beautiful songs on it, namely found in the middle and the end of the disc.

...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead: Source Tags & Codes (2002): Reviews
What makes "Source Tags & Codes" such an amazing album is how the band teeters on the edge of this implosion but always yanks its songs back from collapse at the very last second.
'Source Tags And Codes' comes with an albatross-like weight of expectation round its skinny neck - yet happily, it's supported by a band who have grown to match it.
Sure, they make use of their obviously higher budget and Source Tags And Codes sounds more rich and layered because of it, but like Modest Mouse with The Moon And Antarctica, they've used these new elements to accent their music, not destroy it.

THE MACK : TRAIL OF DEAD: SOURCE TAGS & CODES
Source Tags & Codes, the band's first major label release, is an epic album that defies the notion of selling-out.
Instead of squandering the consequent increase of funds and thoughtlessly basking in the glory of a "major record deal," Trail of Dead utilized their new studio opportunities to beef up their sound by adding strings, saxophones and even a flugelhorn into the mix.
It tells of our sterile, technology-obsessed world in which personal memories "melt away in source tags and in code." Trail of Dead's new album bucks against this unfeeling trend by making pure, emotional rock 'n' roll with guitars, drums and a few flugelhorns.

One a musical front, …Trail of Dead’s Source Tags and Codes is such an entity; so complicated, so chaotic, yet so beautiful and at peace all at the same time.
Taking the listener to the edges of turmoil just long enough before pulling them back into the comforts and sensibilities of calmer plains (the track "Homage", violently loud and crashing until it hits you with it’s smooth transition).
Source Tags and Codes could very well be the most important major label release of the past decade and the years to follow.

If Source Tags & Codes is any sign of what's to come from these boys, I think I'll be very pleased from what they release in the coming years.
Easily the angriest, yet most cathartic tune on Source Tags and Codes, the majority of "Homage" seems to be little more than angsty, blistering punk, but in traditional Dead fashion, there's more than meets the eye in this one.
After the lack-luster "Relative Ways", we are treated to the instrumental, piano-toting "After the Laughter", a short little tune that segueways nicely into the album's conclusion, "Source Tags and Codes".

And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead Source Tags & Codes
As was true on their 1998 self-titled debut album, and 1999’s Madonna, Source Tags and Codes definitely echoes Sonic Youth circa-1988, but these four men from Austin, Texas are far from a weak imitators.
In spite of having three different vocalists, Source Tags and Codes maintains a consistency of mood and intensity that is truly refreshing to hear in the age of Creed.
A major step-forward from their last two records, Source Tags and Codes probably won’t lift …Trail of Dead into the mainstream spotlight alongside such dreary fare as Puddle of Mudd and Nickelback, but they are sure to lift the spirits of anyone willing to give this album a chance.

In the four years since the release of their monumental Source Tags and Codes, …And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead have suffered both indie backlash and mainstream indifference.
On their follow-up to Source Tags, 2004's rightfully panned Worlds Apart, the unflinching confidence and frenetic energy that made the band's previous albums so convincing suddenly disappeared, leaving little more than a batch of subpar radio-ready modern rock songs.
So Divided is even more elaborately orchestrated and structured than Source Tags and Codes, but its complexity seems inorganic and clumsy, revealing the weakness of the source material rather than elevating and enhancing it.

Interscope took a big gamble handing these guys a recording budget, but it paid off: "Source Tags and Codes'" multiple layers and dense ripples seethe with an unstable volatility that finally captures the band's capriciousness, as well as its sardonic streak.
And therein lies the problem with "Source Tags:" There's not one potential single here.
The heaviness is too arty for metal, the songwriting too inchoate for pop, and the members themselves too flippant to be pinups.

Intricate and reflective as well as gripping and raw, Source Codes & Tags marks And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead's leap from the venerable indie imprint Merge to Interscope's major-label territory.
But Source Codes & Tags isn't so much a more accessible version of the band's sound as it is a more streamlined one; the surging guitars on songs like "It Was There That I Saw You" are even more powerful for their economy.
A driving, incredibly solid album, Source Tags & Codes proves just how much more the members of AYWKUBTTOD have to say -- they're just as combustible as they were on their debut, but now express themselves with a clarity that makes their intensity all the more breathtaking.

Not only will learning HTML coding provide you with the freedom to update your own HTML documents, but it will also save you a great deal of money, as you will be able to avoid hiring a professional web designer.
HTML codes, also referred to as HTML tags, are enclosed by the lesser than (<) and greater than (>) brackets and may be written in capital or lower case letters.

Thus, expectations were high for Worlds Apart, though even the most avid of the Trail of Dead street team members would have to admit that no one could rightfully expect that band to top Source Tags & Codes.

This, their second album, sounds less polished than "Source Tags + Codes" yet remains in the vein of gorgeously constructed and well thought out indie rock.
