  Sousse, Tunisia
Sousse (Arabic Souza), the third largest city in Tunisia (after Tunis and Sfax) and capital of the Tunisian Sahel, lies at the south end of the Gulf of Hammamet, fringed by a beach of fine sand and surrounded by extensive olive plantations.
Until the late sixties the economy of Sousse was almost exclusively centered on its Harbor, which exported the agricultural produce (mainly olive oil and esparto grass) grown in the surrounding area and processed in the town as well as phosphates from the Metlaoui area.
Sousse lies on GP 1 (Tunis-Sfax), 140km/87mi south of Tunis and 127km/79mi north of Sfax.

Sousse was founded in the 9th century BC by the Phoenicians, who gave it the name Hadrumet.
Tunisians are proud of mosaics, but our personal opinion is that it would have been nice to find something else as well.
If you do not make visits outside the Sousse during your journey, then the ribat museum mosaics are well worth a visit.

The beach, of soft powdery sand, was a mere 50 metres or so from the hotel entrance and was clean and the beach loungers were inexpensive to hire.
Hammam Sousse, a fairly short transfer from Monastir airport, makes a good base for exploring the surrounding area - taxis are relevatively cheap if you agree a price before travelling - and our holiday company offered some very good excursions.
Starting with the actual place, Sousse is a nice part of Tunisia and to be honest, much better the Skanes as there is not much to do there.

Under the ancient Romans it thrived until the 3rd century A.D. Vandals and Byzantines followed, but most of what makes Sousse fascinating dates from the 9th century, when it was a vital port of the Aghlabid empire.
A must is the Ribat (number 2 piccy), that has wicked architecture and an excellent view over Sousse, especially on clear days.
Access to Sousse is easy from destinations further afield, especially along the coast.

The location of the hotel is half way between Sousse and Port el Kantaoui so a bit out of the way but taxis are cheap and plentiful-about 1.50pounds each way and twice that after 9pm.
