Souterrain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Souterrain is a name given by archaeologists to a type of underground structure associated with the Atlantic Iron Age.
Regional names include earth houses, fogous and Pictish houses and they appear to have been brought northwards from Gaul during the late Iron age.
Souterrains are underground galleries and in their early stages were always associated with a settlement.

 SOUTERRAIN
Souterrains are artificially constructed or excavated subterranean structures generally consisting of a chamber or chambers with an entrance passage and, when required, connecting passages.
The presence of a false facade was recorded in a souterrain at Knockanenagark in Co. Cork (Gillman 1897, 4).
The close comparisons between the two souterrains at Newrath Big in the siting of their entrances, the probable existence of two circular beehive chambers in each case, and their possession of a linear and an L-shaped passage would strongly suggest that they were constructed by the same team of builders and were thus roughly contemporary.

As the souterrain is located around 120m across a field in a fairly remote area, a renewable source of energy for the lighting was required.
A souterrain is an artificially built or dug underground structure, often built within pre-existing ringforts but many were constructed independently of enclosures and the most common are built in a dry-stone style.
The function of the souterrain has long been the subject of debate and the most accepted opinion is that they were used primarily as a place of refuge and occasionally as a storage site.

Sometimes called an earth-house, souterrains usually consist of an entrance followed by a curved corridor or tunnel, about 15-20 feet long, and quite often a small chamber at the end.
This could mean that the souterrain was only used as a last resort, in time of attack, or perhaps in severe weather conditions, or perhaps simply as a cellar.

 Souterrain
"Souterrain" is French for "underground"...my mission statement for Souterrain can be summed up by the wise words of U2's Bono,"...we will continue to abuse our positions and f*** up the mainstream." Here at Souterrain I realize the importance that truth (truth being knowledge) should be something accessible and tangible to all youth.
So you might have wondered who this "I" person is that's mentioned in the mission statement...that would be me, Michelle Coudon (it's a decent French name), also known as Diva...or as most people call me (more like I WISH they would say) Venus in the flesh.
One of my many visions for the future is that Souterrain will someday develop into a mega-online magazine, equipped with the most informative hype happening in the art industries.
