The formation of popular teams such as Orlando Pirates (1937) and Moroka Swallows (1947) and rising attendance at Black soccer matches in Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town in the late 1930s and 1940s stemmed primarily from the dramatic increase in the number of Africans migrating to cities to find work in the war-driven manufacturing expansion.

South Africa's friendly international against Madagascar at the end of the month is in jeopardy after the Indian Ocean islanders double-booked their national football team for the same weekend.
South African Football Association general secretary Albert Mokoena said on Tuesday he would seek an explanation from the Malagasy Football Federation, as the marketability of the international would be affected.
Madagascar are to send their national side, including Swiss-born coach Hans Heiniger and their foreign-based players to Tunisia, and a B side to South Africa, coached by Auguste Raux, coach of the champion club AS Adema.
