The South African Army is the army of South Africa.
The South African military evolved within the tradition of frontier warfare fought by popular militias and small irregular commando forces, reinforced by the Afrikaners' historical distrust of large standing armies.
The South African 2nd Infantry Division also took part in a number of actions in North Africa during 1942, but on 21 June 1942 two complete infantry brigades of the division as well as most of the supporting units were captured at the fall of Tobruk.

 History for 6th Infantry Division
It was one of the 102 Infantry Divisions mobilized in 1917 for the American Expeditionary Force to fight the Germans Army in WWI.
During the summer of 1942 the 3rd Battalion of the 1st Infantry Regiment was detached from the Division and served time with General Patton and participated in combat maneuvers in Tennessee.
The 6th Infantry Division was deactivated at Fort Ord, California February 1949 and reactivated at Fort Ord 1950 - deactivated at Fort Ord, California in 1956.

The 9th Division was first formed in the United Kingdom during 1940, using one of the 6th Division units, the 18th Brigade, as its core.
The 9th Division, along with a New Zealand, a South African, an Indian and a British division, grouped as the 30th Corps, formed the main attack in the north.
The balance of the 9th Division (the 20th and 24th Brigades) went ashore at Labuan Island and Brunei on the north-west coast of Borneo on 10 June 1945.
