South African Breweries yesterday confirmed it is keen to buy Bass Brewers if Interbrew is forced to sell the business it bought for £2.3bn last year.
SAB, which brews two-thirds of Africa's beer, detailed its ambitions as it posted a pre-tax profit of $646m (£461m), down 7% on the previous year, on turnover for the year to the end of March of $4.18bn, down 3% on the previous year.
SAB said its international business had delivered strong growth - group drink volumes rose 12% and lager beer volumes were up 18% - and its Polish operations had "performed spectacularly".

South African Breweries was founded in 1895 by Jacob Letterstedt specifically to serve a new market of miners and prospectors in and around Johannesburg.
Breweries were no exception, and seeing an opportunity, SAB began to invest heavily in breweries in Hungary (1993), Romania, Poland (1996), Slovakia (1997), and Russia (1998).
SAB’s international strategy was to focus on well-established brands in underdeveloped countries, and to concentrate on “cheaper brews in an effort to woo mass market drinkers.” These were also markets where state intervention in the private sector had been significant, and often local governments continued as major shareholders.
