The South African Medical Service (SAMS) was established as a full service branch of the South African Defence Force (SADF) in 1979 in order to consolidate the medical services of the South African Army, Navy and Air Force.
Together, these units provide comprehensive medical care for military personnel and their dependents, as well as the police and employees of other security-related government departments, and occasionally to neighboring countries.
The SAMS is organized into regional medical commands, corresponding to the army's regional commands, as well as a Medical Logistics Command and a Medical Training Command.

 SOUTH AFRICAN DEFENCE FORCE 1994-2003
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and its branches have their own service flags that are variants of the South African national flag.
All the service flags adopted in 1994-1995 were identical to those used previously, except for the substitution of the 1994 national flag for the 1928 national flag in the canton.
In 2001 new service insignia began to be introduced, and these have now replaced the previous designs, which were carried over from the days of white minority rule.

CNN.com - World - South African medical council announces AIDS vaccine trials - October 4, 2000
CAPE TOWN, South Africa -- South Africa's Medical Research Council made a pair of key announcements on Wednesday, including a discovery that heating breast milk from a mother carrying the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) could prevent the virus' transmission from mother to child.
With one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS infections on the African continent, South Africa has been in sharp focus because of a controversial stand made by President Thabo Mbeki, who declared that he did not believe HIV was the sole cause of AIDS.
About one in 10 South Africans are infected with AIDS or HIV, studies show, with an estimated 1,700 people added to the list each day.

The GULLY | Africa | The Torture of Queer Soldiers in the Apartheid Military
This piece is based on the ground-breaking 1999 South African study "The Aversion Project: Human rights abuses of gays and lesbians in the South African Defense Force by health workers during the apartheid era." The study uncovers abuse against white gay and lesbian soldiers.
When forced to choose between the public shame of being handed over to the South African Police and prosecuted in a criminal court, or being treated in a psychiatric hospital, thousands of conscripts 'consented' to be treated by SAMS, especially if they themselves had internalized homophobia.
In the post-apartheid era, it is easy to speculate that had the medical force, SAMS, been answerable to the Department of Health, and not the Department of Defense, many of the abuses wouldn't have happened.
