South African Navy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The South African Navy (SAN), is the navy of South Africa.
The Seaward Defence Force and the South African RNVR were amalgamated on 1 August 1942 to form the South African Naval Forces (SANF).
When South Africa became a republic on May 31st 1961, the title of HMSAS (Her Majesty's South African Ship) was changed to SAS (South African Ship), and the Crown in the SAN badge was replaced with a lion, the crest from the country's coat of arms.

 South African Navy (SAN)
The navy is commanded by a vice admiral, the chief of the navy.
The chief of the navy is assisted by a chief of naval operations and a chief of naval support; the latter two positions are filled by rear admirals.
South Africa's navy is also in demand by other African governments; in the early 1990s, for example, South African personnel performed naval facility repairs for Zaire, marine surveys for Mozambique, and relief-supply transport to Kenya for shipment to Somalia and Rwanda.

The South African National Defence Force - SANDF
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is facing a challenging year in 2003 in which it will not only receive the first corvette of its multi billion dollar arms acquisition programme, but also the beginning of a down-scaling programme to get rid of some 20,000 ageing soldiers, reports Erika Gibson.
According to the Navy its biggest challenge remains the timeous provision of adequate numbers of suitable personnel with the appropriate entry requirements from the fleet to the corvette project to receive training for the manning of the vessels and the Navy support structures.
Whilst awaiting the activation the South African project team and the main contractor, BAE SAAB, have been actively involved in creating the design baseline for the export variant of the Gripen.

The perception that the Navy is in a state of decline and about to become irrelevant, with whatever good intentions it is voiced, is bad for the image of the Navy and for the morale of its members.
The Navy, with the forces at its disposal and with the assistance of the Air Force, has the ability to play an important peacetime role in support of the seaward functions of other state departments, notably the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Environmental Affairs, the Department of Transport and the Department of Justice.

A Response to Simpson-Anderson , Restructuring the Armed Forces - South African Defence Review No 10, 1993
The demise of the Cold War, a perceptible shift in regional Southern African relations, and the progress of the present transition are all impacting upon the South African military debate in a profound and specific manner.
Whilst this redefinition of the South African Navy's role is understandable in light of the changing international, regional and domestic threat scenario, it appears that the Navy's primary mission (surely the rationale for its existence) has been sacrificed at the altar of generality.
The navies of South America, although mostly larger than the present South African Navy, have neither the capacity nor predisposition to launch a maritime assault against Southern African shores.
