Atlantic Ocean - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bounded by the Americas on the west and Europe and Africa on the east, the Atlantic is linked to the Pacific Ocean by the Arctic Ocean on the north and the Drake Passage on the south.
Due to the Coriolis effect, water in the North Atlantic circulates in a clockwise direction, whereas water circulation in the South Atlantic is counter clockwise.
The climate of the Atlantic Ocean and adjacent land areas is influenced by the temperatures of the surface waters and water currents as well as the winds blowing across the waters.

 Atlantic Ocean - History
The Atlantic Ocean is essentially an S-shaped north-south channel, extending from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Antarctic continent in the south and situated between the eastern coast of the American continents and the western coasts of Europe and Africa.
The South Atlantic is arbitrarily separated from the Indian Ocean on the east by the 20° east meridian and from the Pacific on the west along the line of shallowest depth between Cape Horn and the Antarctic Peninsula.
The Atlantic Ocean may be described as a bed of water colder than 9° C (48° F)-the cold-water sphere-within which lies a bubble of water warmer than 9° C-the warm-water sphere.

 South Atlantic
In the South Atlantic these transform faults are typically spaced some 50-100 km apart, reflect relative plate motion directions of the newly formed crust and occur at offsets of the normal faulted median rift valley that marks the axis of the ridge.
For South America (east of the Andes), as noted above, the plate motion is consistently to the NW with an Euler pole located at approximately 25.4°S and 126.4°W. For South America west of the Andes the motions to the NE are consistent with the subduction of the Nazca plate beneath the Andes.
Inspection of the satellite gravity for the South Atlantic indicates that deformation of the oceanic crust appears to be quite common and may be the controlling factor in the development of the Walvis Ridge and Rio Grande Rise aseismic ridges.

 The South Atlantic Current
The South Atlantic Current (SAC, McCartney 1977) is distinct from the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, and is the southern branch of the subtropical gyre in the South Atlantic.
The hydrographic boundary between the south Atlantic subtropical gyre and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current has been long known as the subtropical convergence (Deacon, 1933) a feature that Krummel (1882) had already described as being a sharp temperature discontinuity streching across most of the south Atlantic.
Based on the 34.9 isohaline, the STF between 35° and 25°W tends to be south of 40°S while it is primarily north of that latitude between 25°W and 10°E (Stramma and Peterson, 1990).

Cyclone Catarina was an extraordinarily rare tropical cyclone, formed in the southern Atlantic Ocean in March, 2004.
Catarina is one of only three South Atlantic cyclones to have been recorded by weather satellites, and the only one ever recorded to have reached hurricane-strength and to have hit land.
If a "hurricane season" were to be demarcated in the South Atlantic, it would most likely be the opposite of the North Atlantic season, from December to May with mid-March being the peak when the oceans are warmest in the Southern Hemisphere.

 South Georgia, South Atlantic Ocean
South Georgia is an island lying on the Scotia Arc in the South Atlantic Ocean located at 37° West, 54.5° South, about 1,300 Km East-South-East of the Falkland Islands.
In the South Atlantic, the only visible evidence of this substantial feature are the volcanic islands of Ascension, St Helena and Tristan da Cunha.
Nearly two hundred islands lay scattered to the east and south of Latin America. These islands, which include South Georgia, were mainly discovered and charted by British navigators, and form part of the Scotia Arc which extends from the Andes to the Antarctic continent.

The South Atlantic thermocline exchanges with the Indian Ocean thermocline, and the injection of Pacific-Ocean-derived Antarctic Intermediate and mode water masses in Drake Passage are part of the "warm route, cold route" debate.
The exchanges between the southern ocean and the Atlantic occur mostly in two very energetic frontal regions, namely the Brazil/Malvinas Confluence, and the Agulhas Current and its retroflection along with the upwelling area of the Benguela Current.

SOUTH ATLANTIC OCEAN TEMPERATURE VARIABILITY: VERTICAL STRUCTURE AND ASSOCIATED CLIMATE FLUCTUATIONS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
However, little is known about the vertical structure of the ocean temperature variations and how the subsurface dynamics might influence on or drive changes in the surface temperature.
Analysis of WOCE temperature profiles collected between 1990 and 1996 are used to determine the nature and vertical extent of the temperature fluctuations in the tropical and subtropical South Atlantic.
In the tropical South Atlantic, the temperature fluctuations are vertically coherent to about 300-meter depths and the largest amplitudes (>1.2º C) occur near 75-meter depths.

In March, 2004 a hurricane DID form in the South Atlantic Ocean and made landfall in Brazil.
But this still leaves the question of why hurricanes are so rare in the South Atlantic.
Though many people might speculate that the sea surface temperatures are too cold, the primary reasons that the South Atlantic Ocean gets few tropical cyclones are that the tropospheric (near surface to 200mb) vertical wind shear is much too strong and there is typically no inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ) over the ocean (Gray 1968).

South Atlantic Ocean and Southern Ocean
Both currents respond to the wind, the ACC responding to the wind stress along its path, whereas the Malvinas Current responds to a barotropic adjustment to changes in the wind stress curl to the north of 50°S, mostly in the Pacific sector [Vivier et al., 2001].
This suggests that two distinct regimes occur at Drake Passage: while barotropic fluctuations to the south are driven by the zonal wind stress, changes to the north seem to be driven by the wind stress curl over subtropical regions of the Pacific as speculated by Hughes et al.
The Agulhas system plays an important role in two ways: first, as the inter-ocean conduit for warm Indian Ocean water into the Atlantic Ocean (the warm water route), thus maintaining the global thermohaline circulation; second, as a key active region in the carbon cycle.

Indian eddies supply Atlantic Ocean with warm water
The Agulhas eddies turned out to be large warm rings of water from the Indian Ocean with a diameter of about 300 kilometres within which the water sometimes rotated at a speed of more than 3.6 kilometres per hour in an anticlockwise direction.
To everyone's surprise the eddy was found to stretch from the ocean surface right down to the ocean floor at a depth of some five kilometres; it therefore has a volume of about 350,000 cubic kilometres.
On the ocean surface, young eddies are at most 5 degrees Celsius warmer than the surrounding Atlantic Ocean.
