Southern United States - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
States shown as pink may or may not be included in the South, with their inclusion or exclusion varying from source to source.
For example, the Deep South is a cultural and geographic subregion of the American South which consists of the South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana (the six founding members of the Confederate States of America).
The easternmost tip of the state is close enough to Baltimore and Washington, DC that it too has started to become an exurb of these areas with a unique North-South "hybrid" culture (in fact, the two easternmost counties, Berkeley and Jefferson, are considered part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area by the Census Bureau).

SOUTH CAROLINA, one of the South Atlantic states of the U.S., bordered on the N by North Carolina, on the E and SE by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the SW and W by Georgia.
The Atlantic flyway along the coast is followed by migrating water fowl, especially ducks and geese, and many kinds of birds, such as the catbird, mockingbird, oriole, and wren, live in the interior regions of the state.
South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union (Dec. 20, 1860), and the attack on Fort Sumter, in Charleston Harbor, on April 12, 1861, marked the beginning of the American Civil War.

The South Atlantic United States form one of the nine divisions within the United States that are formally recognized by that country's census bureau.
Together with the East South Central States (Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennesse) and the West South Central States (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas), the South Atlantic States constitute the United States Census Bureau's broader region of the South (the other three regions being the Northeast, Midwest and West, all of which have two divisions therein).

 Rabies Surveillance, United States, 1988
Except for the absence of cases in the South Atlantic states, the distribution of rabid cattle was similar to that of rabid cats (Figures 16, 17).
In 1987, the Delmarva Rabies Initiative, a cooperative of state and federal health, wildlife, and agriculture agencies, established a zone of immune raccoons by vaccinating raccoons along the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal to protect animal populations in the southern part of the Delmarva Peninsula.
The similar distribution of rabid domestic animals to skunks and raccoons suggests that skunks are the main source of rabies for domestic animals in the North Central and South Central states and that raccoons are the primary source in the Middle Atlantic and South Atlantic states.

The South Atlantic Census Division is located on the southeastern seaboard of the United States.
The higher share of energy consumption devoted to appliances and air-conditioning in the South Atlantic is attributable to the warmer climate, which reduces demand for space and water heating.
Almost half of all South Atlantic households do not have natural gas available in their neighborhoods, and, not surprisingly, there is a greater reliance on electricity for space-heating in the South Atlantic than in other parts of the United States.
