Tropical cyclone - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
In meteorology, a tropical cyclone (or tropical depression, tropical storm, typhoon, or hurricane, depending on strength and geographical context) is a type of low pressure system which generally forms in the tropics.
Tropical cyclones that cause massive destruction are fortunately rare, but when they happen, they can cause damage in the thousands of lives and the billions of dollars.
The deadliest tropical cyclone on record is a 100 mph (160 km/h, Category 2) storm that hit the densely populated Ganges Delta region of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) on November 13, 1970.

Tropical cyclone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tropical cyclones owe this unique characteristic to requiring a relative lack of vertical wind shear to maintain the warm core at the center of the storm.
Tropical systems, while generally located equatorward of the 20th parallel, are steered primarily westward by the east-to-west winds on the equatorward side of the subtropical ridge, a persistent high pressure area over the world's oceans.
When a tropical cyclone moves into higher latitudes to the north of the subtropical ridge axis, its general track around the high-pressure area is deflected significantly by winds moving towards the general low-pressure area to its north.

South Atlantic tropical cyclone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A South Atlantic tropical cyclone is an unusual weather event.
On April 10, 1991, what was either a strong tropical depression or a weak tropical storm formed in the eastern South Atlantic, recorded by weather satellites off the coast of Angola.
Of the few South Atlantic tropical cyclones that have existed, this was the only one in the eastern Atlantic.

If a "hurricane season" were to be demarcated in the South Atlantic, it would most likely be the opposite of the North Atlantic season, from December to May with mid-March being the peak when the oceans are warmest in the Southern Hemisphere.
Cyclone (or Hurricane) Catarina was an extraordinarily rare tropical cyclone, forming in the southern Atlantic Ocean in March 2004.
This would mark the first time in recorded history that two tropical cyclones (Catarina and the January storm) have been seen during the same year in the South Atlantic, and may be considered to make up the 2003-04 South Atlantic hurricane season.

The tropical cyclone moved generally northwestward for a couple of days toward a weakness in the subtropical ridge over the central Atlantic.
Tropical cyclones are experienced in the North Pacific, North Atlantic and North Indian Oceans and nearby tropical seas.
For the purpose of tropical cyclone verification the northern hemisphere is divided in to four basins; the North-West Pacific (west of 180°E to the Malay Peninsula), the North-East Pacific (east of 180°E), the North Atlantic and the North Indian Ocean (west of the Malay Peninsula).

 THE HUTCH ODYSSEY
In meteorology, a tropical cyclone is a storm system with a closed circulation around a center of low pressure, fueled by the heat released when moist air rises and condenses.
They are distinguished from other cyclonic storms such as nor'easters and polar lows by the heat mechanism that fuels them, which makes them "warm core" storm systems.
Tropical cyclones can produce extremely high winds, tornadoes, torrential rain (leading to mudslides and flash floods), and drive storm surge onto coastal areas.

 Tropical cyclone Summary
Typhoons or cyclones are large, often destructive tropical storms similar to the western hemisphere's hurricanes.
Hurricanes, called typhoons or tropical cyclones in the Far East, are intense cyclonic storms which form over warm tropical waters, and generally remain active and strong only while over the oceans.
Tropical cyclones are large circulating storm systems consisting of multiple bands of intense showers and thunderstorms and extremely high winds.

 Tropical Weather Information
A tropical cyclone in which the maximum sustained wind speed is 38 mph or less (less than 33 kt or 17 m/s).
A tropical cyclone in which the maximum sustained wind speed ranges from 39 mph (34 kt or 18 m/s) to 73 mph (63 kt or 33 m/s).
When winds in a tropical cyclone equal or exceed 74 mph (64 kt or 34 m/s) it is called a hurricane.

But on Sunday morning, March 28th, 2004, a storm struck the Brazilian coast that may have changed all of that as forecasters believe it to be the first hurricane ever recorded in that region of the world.
Meteorologists refer to tropical low pressure centers as warm cores because the air in the center of the circulation is warmer then the surrounding environmental air.
The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite is designed to measure rainfall over the global tropics using the combination of a microwave sensor and the first and only precipitation radar in space.

[Freak] `Hurricane` Heading Toward Southern Brazil!
If indeed this is a tropical cyclone, it did not begin in the usual way; rather, it began as an ordinary "cool" trough that sat over warm seas for a few days.
During that time, she says, they've spotted hurricanes (also called "typhoons" or "cyclones") in the northern Atlantic Ocean, and on both sides of the equator in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, but never before in the south Atlantic.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center was in dispute with Brazilian forecasters as to whether this was the first hurricane ever spotted in the South Atlantic.

Image Above: The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite this captured this image of a Tropical Storm in the South Atlantic, March 26, 2004.
The area is so devoid of tropical storm activity that no government agency has an official warning system for storms there, which is why this storm is unnamed.
In this image, the storm is at roughly 28 degrees South Latitude, southeast of the city of Curitaba, which makes a tan splotch against the green vegetation at the top of the image, left of center.

However, late last week, a circulation center well off the coast of southern Brazil developed tropical cyclone characteristics and continued to intensify as it moved westward.
The crew of the International Space Station was notified of the cyclone and acquired excellent photographs of the storm just as it made landfall on the southern Brazilian state of Catarina (the storm has been unofficially dubbed “Hurricane Catarina”).

According to Dr. Greg Holland, a meteorological researcher currently with Radiosonde North America, it's unlikely—though never impossible—that the storm will make landfall in Brazil given the strong westerly winds that dominate the region's weather patterns.
According to Holland, wind speed observations from QuickSat showed maximum surface winds of about 50 knots, but the satellite wasn't positioned to observe the part of the eye where the highest wind speeds would be expected.
