South Belfast is possibly the UUP’s best chance of hanging onto a seat in 2005, but with the DUP contesting this area this time out, and SF resurgent following the (admittedly, creditable) performance of Alex Maskey during his time as Lord Mayor of Belfast, this will be a dogfight.

I prepared this as a 'thought-piece' in the aftermath of the South Antrim by-election late in 2000.

In addition, because of the concentration of disproportionately large constituencies in the south-east and of relatively small constituencies in the north-west, existing disparities in constituency size would probably be reinforced rather than ironed out.
