Leland explained that, according to the residents of 16th-century South Cadbury, the hill-fort near their church had been the site of Camelot.
However, in Leland’s time, the 500-foot hill at South Cadbury offered little physical evidence, though his notes provide important clues which were later confirmed.
Archaeological studies show that the Cadbury hill-fort is the right size, with enough importance, from the correct time period, and in a location that meshes perfectly with the Glastonbury legends.

Research: The Archaeology of South-West Landscapes
Demographic patterns, technologies, territoriality, exchange systems, social organisation and patterns of movement through the landscape are rooted within a theoretical base, but are explored through excavation, geophysical survey, fieldwork, lithic and pottery analysis and environmental sampling in an attempt to understand the economic base of prehistoric societies in relation to resource utilisation and landscape use.
The relationship between field survey techniques and strategies and their subsequent landscape narratives is being explored at South Cadbury from the Neolithic to the Early Medieval periods.
The investigation of Cadbury Castle's environs began in 1992, building on the excavations at the hillfort directed by Leslie Alcock from 1966-70.
