You could be forgiven for thinking that south Derbyshire was essentially a place of trains, planes and automobiles, but its role in the industrial life of the British Isles has much greater significance.
While the north of Derbyshire is dominated by Britain’s first national park in the Peak District, the southern reaches are not only characterised by farms, picturesque villages and old fashioned inns but also memories of a sometimes dark yet prosperous past.
A swathe of south Derbyshire is now home to the New National Forest where six million trees have been so far been planted.

Derbyshire (pronounced 'Dar-bee-shur') is a county in the East Midlands of England, which boasts some of England's most attractive scenery.
The northern part of Derbyshire overlaps with the Pennines, a famous chain of hills and mountains.
Although Derbyshire is generally considered to be in the East Midlands, some parts, such as High Peak, are closer to the northern cities of Manchester and Sheffield and the people there overwhelmingly think of themselves as northerners.

There are traces of Norman style work in the South doorway with its semicircular head and plain mouldings, and also in the small window high up over the door leading to the Vestry, but both these features have been substantially restored, if not completely replaced in later years.
Some 200 years later, at about the time of the building of Sudbury Hall, the South porch was built and a balustrade parapet was added to the tower.

Following the farcical conference of Westminster during which the Casket Letters were produced in evidence against Mary, she was taken further south from Bolton Castle to Tutbury in Derbyshire in January of 1569.
By March however, Shrewsbury reported that Mary was severely ill with "grief of the spleen", symptoms which her doctor attributed to "windy matters ascending to the head".
This is how Mary came to be moved to the more comfortable prison of Wingfield Manor, now an imposing ruin outside the village of South Wingfield in Derbyshire, where she was lodged in the north-east tower with views across the valley.

South Normanton’s secondary industry in medieval times was that of tanning.

 Sinfin, Derby, Derbyshire, England
Sinfin Moor represents an extensive area to the south of Derby, bounded in the west by Stenson, in the east by Chellaston, in the north by Normanton and Allenton, and in the south by Swarkestone and Barrow-upon-Trent.
White's 1857 Directory of Derbyshire describes the grandstand as being situated next to land owned by Elizabeth Bancroft (who was at that time the farmer at Sinfin House) but also notes that it had been taken down some years previously.
The land to the south of the City boundary is still farmed, and though by no stretch of the imagination outstandingly beautiful, there are some pleasant walks.
