  South Down (UK Parliament constituency) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
South Down is a Parliamentary Constituency in the House of Commons and also an Assembly constituency in the Northern Ireland Assembly.
The seat was re-created in 1950 when the old Down two MP constituency was abolished as part of the final move to single member seats.
In 1983 the seat was radically cut down as part of an expansion of Northern Ireland's constituencies from 12 to 17.

South Down had lost 9.54% of its electorate in the great electoral register shake-out, varying from 17.60% in the Bracken and Kilbroney ward of Newry and Mourne to 4.55% in the Rathfriland ward of Banbridge.
Malachi Curran was elected to the Forum as a Labour 'top-up' candidate and stood unsuccessfully in South Down in 1998.

It is proposed that the South Down constituency be extended to include the three Newry and Mourne LGD wards of St Mary’s, St Patrick’s and Windsor Hill at present in the Newry and Armagh constituency, and the Banbridge LGD ward of Loughbrickland at present in the Upper Bann constituency.
It is proposed that the size of the electorate of the Upper Bann constituency be varied by the transfer of the Craigavon LGD ward of Aghagallon to the Lagan Valley constituency.

Also, one gathers that implicit within SOUTH PARK is a rejection of, even attack of rampant commerciality, especially when aimed at kids.
This is by no means a grievance (although it becomes a worry that the viewer constituency of say, 90210 is that same as that of SOUTH PARK) as many products have crossed this market divide and still produced quality.
What is of concern is the inundation of SOUTH PARK merchandise flooding the (one might argue) already saturated entertainment market, resultant from the propounded 3 hours and 10 minutes of TV the average Australian consumes per day.

The Constituency stretches to the south, down the A10 as far as Thundridge, before proceeding further south to Tewin and the Five Greens, but missing out Hertford and Ware.
The four towns in the Constituency have many small to medium sized research-based high technology companies, and the area is also a centre for light engineering.
The large agricultural area of the Constituency is made up mainly of arable land, but there are sheep breeders to the south and some dairy and pig units.

I prepared this as a 'thought-piece' in the aftermath of the South Antrim by-election late in 2000.
The whole of Northern Ireland elects three members to the European Parliament by STV; each parliamentary constituency elects six members to the Northern Ireland Assembly; and the 582 members of the 26 local councils are elected from 101 electoral areas, each of which returns five, six or seven representatives.
North Down must be grouped with Strangford because of its corner position - the alternative, grouping North Down with the Belfast constituencies and Strangford with South Down and Lagan Valley, looks rather peculiar.
