South Australia is a state of Australia, in the southern central part of the country, along the Southern Ocean.
South Australia was officially settled as a new British province on December 28, 1836 (now commemorated as a public holiday, Proclamation Day) and the site of the new city was surveyed and laid-out by Colonel William Light, the first Surveyor-General of South Australia.
Adelaide is connected to Port Wakefield Road and the Sturt Highway in the north, and the South Eastern Freeway in the South East.

Australian Towns, Cities & Highways: South Eastern Freeway
The South Eastern Freeway, South Australia's first ever freeway was built in the mid 1970's and links Adelaide with rapidly growing regional centre of Murray Bridge.
The freeway replaced a notoriously slow section of the old Princes Highway through the Adelaide Hills and promoted growth into areas outside the Adelaide metro area due to the alleviated access issues.
The freeway originally stopped at Whites Hill (5km west of Murray Bridge) although the completion of the Murray Bridge bypass and the construction of the Swanport Bridge to link back to the Princes Highway marked the end of the project.

Monash Freeway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Monash Freeway is an amalgamation of two initially separate freeways: the Mulgrave Freeway (initially designated with a F-81 shield) linking Springvale Road, Mulgrave to the Princes Highway in Hallam; and the South Eastern Freeway (initially designated with a F-80 shield) linking Punt Road, Richmond and Burke Road, Glen Iris.
A portion of the Monash Freeway at the city end (from Toorak to Punt Roads) was eventually incorporated into the CityLink project in the late 1990s by way of tunnels underneath the city to link to the eastern-end of the Westgate Freeway, allowing for an uninterrupted voyage past the CBD.
The freeway was extended by 7.5 km in late 2003 when the Hallam Bypass was completed after 3 years of construction (also opening 6 months ahead of schedule and A$80 million under budget), connecting the Monash Freeway in Hallam to the Princes Freeway in Berwick.

The Encyclopædia of South Australian Culture: S
The late 1980’s saw major upgrading of the southern sections of South Road, with an overpass being built over the Cross Road/Noarlunga railway line crossing and the entire lenght of the road from Edwardstown down to the Torrens River remodelled to be fully two lanes with decent parking bays.
The plan was scuttled by the Dunstan government in the early 1970’s, though some elements lived on in the form of the South Eastern freeway and the O-Bahn (which was, originally, slated to be a freeway along the Torrens).
South Road had been triplicated in the early 1960’s up to O’Halloran Hill then Reynella, and doubled beyond to improve flow but come the mid 1990’s it was not able to keep up.
