Meantime, the SER was experiencing problems with the high tolls paid to the London and Greenwich Railway for the use of their track and in company with the LandCR and LandBR tried to break this stranglehold by taking over control of London Bridge station.
This line was purchased by the SER in 1846 as part of their scheme to provide a link to Chatham and services temporarily discontinued while the line was being upgraded, works which included filling in the canal and laying a double track.
After considerable discussions, the SER and the LCDR combined under the South Eastern and Chatham Railway Management Committee to operate as one railway with pooled resources, the profits to be shared, the SER taking 60% and the LCDR 40%.

 Railways in Dover - General History
Dover’s first rail connection with London was established by the South Eastern Railway (SER) on 7 February 1844, when it opened (from Folkestone) the final section of its main line to Dover Town Station.
In 1862 the SER opened an extension from the Town Station to connect with rails laid by the Admiralty on the Admiralty Pier.
In January 1923 the SER and LCDR were grouped, along with other railway companies in the South of England, to form the Southern Railway.

The height from the platform to the top of the bronze is 18 ft. Behind the main monument is a Portland stone wall bearing the names, and the inscription, " 5,222 men of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway served in the War.

January 1899 the South Eastern and Chatham Companies’ Managing Committee (better known as the SEandCR) was formed by the union of the South Eastern Railway (SER) and the London, Chatham and Dover Railway (LCDR).
The railway, always short of capital was then forced, by SER obstruction to extend first to Dover (1861) and then to London Victoria in 1862; the railway’s name being changed to the London Chatham and Dover Railway in 1859.
By the end of the war the South Eastern and Chatham Railway, which had had carried more than its fair share of the war effort, was in a good position for further development and reconstruction.

Konkan Railway (KR) is constituted as a separately incorporated railway, with its headquarters at Belapur CBD (Navi Mumbai), although it still comes under the control of the Railway Ministry and the Railway Board.

 The Hindu Business Line : Freight loading up for South Eastern Railway
SOUTH Eastern Railway (SER), the profit-making flagship of the Indian Railways, has achieved a higher originating freight loading for the April-July period at 22.99 million tones (mt), 0.56 mt more than that in the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
Owing to the improved freight loading performance for this period, SER recorded higher originating earnings of Rs 920.44 crore (Rs 855 crore), showing an increase of 7.6 per cent from the same period last year.
In the area of raw materials to steel plants, SER achieved a loading of 6.35 mt for the four-month period.

L2653 Photographed from an original engraving, this is Sir Edward William Watkin, the Victorian railway magnate whose ambition led to the construction of the London Extension.
In 1845 he became Secretary to the Trent Valley Railway, and in 1853 he began his long relationship with the Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincolnshire Railway (later Great Central Railway) when he was appointed as General Manager.
During this time, Watkin was also the Chairman of the South Eastern Railway (1866-94) and the Metropolitan Railway (1872-94).

The London and Greenwich Railway (LGR) and the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway (CWR) in East Kent were the earliest railways to serve the then county of Kent: eventually both became parts of the South Eastern Railway (SER).
This "cut-off" line, 24 miles in length, reached Chislehurst on Jul 1 1865, but took three more years to reach Sevenoaks (opening date March 2 1868) and Tonbridge (May 1 1868).
