The branch railway connecting Whitstable with Canterbury was one of the earliest in England, opened in 1830.
There is also a considerable coasting trade in coal in conjunction with the South-Eastern and Chatham railway company, who are the owners of the harbour, which accommodates vessels of about 400 tons alongside the quay.

The South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SECR) came about on 1 January 1899, when the South Eastern Railway joined with the London, Chatham and Dover Railway under a Management Committee composed of the directors of the two companies.
The union is curious in that the two probably hated each other more than any other two companies in the UK.
After the formation of the SECR three minor lines were built before the SECR became one of the constituent parts of the Southern Railway in 1923.

The SECR was primarily a passenger railway feeding commuters into its London terminus at Charring Cross but although new improved carriages were introduced for longer haul work the inner London services were never very popular with passengers.
SECR locomotives were originally two-tone green but this changed to an all over very dark grey (almost fl) during the First World War.
The SECR had their own fleet of coal wagons, some were eight plank end door types and a suitable plastic kit is available to members of the N Gauge Society.

It was unveiled by R.H Cosmo-Bonsor the Chairman of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway Managing Committee on the 28th October 1922.

The ruins of Gundulph's Tower stand detached from and are earlier than the church; this tower was built by Bishop Gundulph probably as a defensive work for the eastern boundary of the city.

January 1899 the South Eastern and Chatham Companies’ Managing Committee (better known as the SEandCR) was formed by the union of the South Eastern Railway (SER) and the London, Chatham and Dover Railway (LCDR).
The railway, always short of capital was then forced, by SER obstruction to extend first to Dover (1861) and then to London Victoria in 1862; the railway’s name being changed to the London Chatham and Dover Railway in 1859.
By the end of the war the South Eastern and Chatham Railway, which had had carried more than its fair share of the war effort, was in a good position for further development and reconstruction.

CosmoBonsor Chairman of the Managing Committee of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway, on October 28 1922 unveiled the War Memorial which was erected at Dover Marine station to the 556 South Eastern and Chatham railwaymen who gave their lives in the Great War.
The height from the platform to the top of the bronze is 18 ft. Behind the main monument is a Portland stone wall bearing the names, and the inscription, " 5,222 men of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway served in the War.

The South Eastern Railway built its own signal frames at its Angerstein works from as early as 1867.
These were not totally dissimilar in style to the south Eastern frames - the lever stoke was equally short and awkward, but the quadrant plates were more conventional in being of steel with raised catch guides.
The South Eastern and Chatham companies merged in 1899, but signalling continued to be managed separately for some while.

In October 1943 the Southern Railway sold the entire set of three coaches to the Longmoor Military Railway, No. 60 becoming AD 5312 and No. 61 AD 5311 in the Army lists.
It's body construction is very similar to No 88 (SECR No 2947) but it was actually built as 3rd class five compartment 6 wheeler, although many of its fellows were converted to 4 wheelers.It came to the KandESR from the Spa Valley Railway in 1999 having previously been on the North Downs Railway.

Of the standard-gauge light railways of Kent, one of the most successful was the Sheppey Light Railway, conceived by the islanders in the 1890s and engineered by the well-known Holman F. Stephens.
After being absorbed into the South Eastern and Chatham Railway the line was improved, enlarged and partly standardized.
Rolling stock is varied at the present time and may not be truly typical of that which ran on the light railway.

At first glance, Merstham appears to be a typical South Eastern Railway weatherboard and sash window signal box, of the style illustrated at Edenbridge.
However, it did not open until 1905, well into South Eastern and Chatham days, when most new boxes were built to the design illustrated at Dover Marine.
Merstham was mid-way along the route that ran parallel to the London, Brighton and South Coast's main Brighton line (a train can be seen passing behind the box) to serve Redhill.
