 Tasmanian Forests We Must Protect
In 1996, the Tasmanian Conservation Trust proposed a series of reserves from the Avenue River in the north and the Wielangta forest in the south to protect unlogged stands of native forest in the Eastern Tiers.
The Reedy Marsh Forest Conservation Group has long been battling to protect local native forests from logging for nearly 10 years and has proposed a reserve to cover remaining important forests at Reedy Marsh.
Forests outside these proposed reserves should also be protected from clearfelling or woodchipping.

 $2.7 million from the Natural Heritage Trust
Nearly 9,000 hectares of Tasmania’s forests will be permanently protected with funding of $2.7 million from the Commonwealth Government’s Natural Heritage Trust, the Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Dr David Kemp, the Minister for Forestry and Conservation, Senator Ian Macdonald and the Tasmanian Minister for Primary Industries, Water and Environment, David Llewellyn, announced today.
The remnants of two Tasmanian forest communities considered endangered due to a substantial loss of their original area will be protected with the funding announced today.
The forest habitats of several threatened animals such as the swift parrot and the giant freshwater crayfish, and threatened plants such as the native soybean and South Esk pine will also be secured with today’s funding.

We work in all parts of the reserve, some of which is administered by the Launceston City Council and the remainder by the Department of Tourism, Parks, Heritage and the Arts.
The reserve covers an area of over 440 hectares, bounded on the south and west by the spectacular gorge of the South Esk River and Trevallyn Dam and to the north and east by the suburb of Trevallyn.
The reserve is used for a variety of recreational activities, including orienteering (an excellent orienteering map is available), horseriding (there is a large equestrian area), bicycle riding, cable hang-gliding, boating (on Trevallyn Dam) and walking and jogging.

The town is 26 kms north of Fingal, adjacent to the upper reaches of the South Esk River.
