A discussion paper was used as a basis for community and stakeholder participation in the process of developing environmental management goals for the waterways that are located within the Great Lake and Brumbys Creek Catchments and the Lower Macquarie and South Esk Rivers.
The paper was prepared by the Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment (Environment Division, Land and Water Management Branch, and the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service) with the assistance of the Northern Midlands, Meander Valley, West Tamar, Launceston City and the Central Highlands Councils in 1999.

The South Esk rises high in the Grampian Mountains above the Glen Clova Hotel and drains the wilderness areas of the Glen Doll before winding it’s way to the North Sea at Montrose via Montrose B asin.
Salmon are present in the river when the season opens on February 16 but they are slow to pass upstream in low temperatures due to the dam at Kinnaird (near Brechin) and other obstacles further upstream.
The river can be easily fished with a single handed rod rated at #7 or #8 or a double handed rod between 12 and 14 feet long.

This, along with the Macquarie, Meander and the North Esk rivers, forms the Tamar River Basin, with a combined catchment area of nearly 9,000 square kilometres.
River levels in the Huon River can also rise very quickly, particularly during spring when snowmelt can be significant.
Flooding of rivers in the west and south of the state go largely unnoticed as they pass through rugged and sparsely populated regions.

 DUCK REACH FACTS AND INFORMATION
The plant was a 'run of the river' station, making use of very little storage, and instead using the daily flow of the South_Esk_River to provide sufficient water for generation.
The plant was constructed a significant height aboive the South Esk River so as to prevent it from being damaged in the frequent floods that rush down the Cataract Gorge in times of heavy rainfall.
Construction of a new South Esk River hydro-electric power plant began in 1951 and the Trevallyn_Dam and Power Station were completed in 1955.

Swans are common both on the river and in the basin and other species you should spot, in the summer, include eider ducks, curlews and oystercatches.
This walk follows the River South Esk downstream from historic Bridge of Dun, once the lowest crossing on the river, to the basin where the relatively narrow flow opens out into a vast expanse of gently rippling water.
It is possible at this stage to wander by the river for a short distance but you must make sure you are south of a reedy lagoon otherwise you could end up having to paddle across its outflow into the river.

The rivers in the far north, Helmsdale, Haladale and Thurso have enjoyed better sport and in the east and south the Tay and the Tweed have also fared better.
That part of the river is close to my heart, I have fished it now for 33 years and have lots and lots of memories of Glen Clova, one of the least spoilt glens in Scotland.
Later when the river drops many of the locals resort to single handed rods using floating #7 or #8 lines in conjunction with small flies, down to size 14 when the water is very low and warm.

 Finavon Castle Fishing on the River Esk, Scotland
These two rivers offer the highest quality of sport in glorious surroundings for the fly fisherman, from the opening day on 16th February to the close of the season on 31st October.
In the spring and autumn months, when the snow is melting and the rainfall high, the river flows strongly with good water levels and ample room for fishermen to flex their muscles and cast a long line across the pools which, as often as not, hold good numbers of salmon ready to take the fly.
The South Esk catchment plan is progressing well with one of the major projects the restoration of seatrout stocks.

Montrose town is situated on the north bank of the River South Esk just to the west of where it meets the sea.
A bridge across the River South Esk would have improved access to Montrose's market and harbour for the goods produced on their estates and there were plans to speculatively develop Rossie Island as the "New Montrose".
However, by the 1870s the railway bridge carrying the North British Railway over the River South Esk was being built and the mantle of "problem bridge" had undoubtedly passed to this one instead.

The waters of the South Esk River and its many tributaries, which rise in the mountains of North East Tasmania and the Central Plateau, have carved out a huge gorge which runs for 16 kilometres through steep hills and 50 metre high cliffs.
The river flows north and north-east between the Blackstone Hills and Grassy Hut Tier until it reaches the man-made Lake Trevallyn and the Trevallyn Dam.
At the junction of the South Esk and the Tamar Rivers, two bridges cross the Gorge: the elegant 1860's iron arch of the King's Bridge and the smooth concrete curve of the 1960's Paterson Bridge.

 North Esk, River
A river of Angus and Aberdeenshire, the North Esk is formed in the southern Grampians by the meeting of the Water of Mark and the Water of Lee in Angus.
It flows east and south east through Glen Esk, falling down through the Braes of Angus to the valley of Strathmore where it flows onwards to enter the North Sea 4 miles (6 km) north of Montrose.
This river is one of the most prolific salmon rivers in the northern hemisphere, although the spring run has declined, as is the case with other Scottish rivers.

The north side of the River South Esk offered deep water whatever the state of the tide, and the town that grew here was given a Royal Charter by David I in the 1100s.
By 1180 there was a royal castle at Montrose, and a ferry plied between the town and Ferryden on the south side of the River South Esk.

The false color image acquired on January 31 by the Aqua satellite shows what appears to be the South Esk River (top center) swollen beyond its normal size.
The River was barely visible in an image acquired by the Terra satellite on January 14, before the rain began.
News reports say that the South Esk River closed at least one major road as the floodwaters moved downstream.

Tropical cyclone Walter dissipated quickly and was downgraded to a tropical low as it moved south on the 8th bringing rain to the Lower and Central West districts.
On the 26th at Murwillumbah (Northern Rivers) 3cm hail and 50mm of rain fell in 40 minutes.
Moderate flooding occurred in the South Esk River at Fingal and Llewellyn and in the Macquarie River at Mt Morriston.

The beat is normally fished by two or three rods, and the emphasis is on pools being lightly fished, so that visiting anglers are always able to fish unspoiled water.
Alasdair and Tony have worked together at Finavon for 15 years, and the fruits of their efforts are now starting to show, especially in the numbers of fish seen in the pools throughout the year.
Alasdair lives close to the water and is an expert on the South Esk and its fishing.

sk, South, a river of Forfarshire, 48¾ miles long, rising in the NW corner of the county, at an altitude of 3150 feet above sea-level, within ½ mile of feeders of the Callader and Muick, both of which flow to the Dee.
In its upper reaches its waters are supplemented by Lochs Brandy and Wharral, Rottal and Glenmoy Burns, flowing in on the E bank, and on the W side by White Water from Glen Doll, Drums Burn, and Prosen Water, joining it at Cortachy.

On the northern bank of the river, just beyond this hamlet, are the remains of an old castle, once the seat of the Ogilvies.

A warning for minor flooding is out for the South Esk river basin as floodwaters from the rain, which eased off over the catchment around 04.30, move downstream over the weekend.
Moist winds ahead of the low are converging and rising, assisted by strong upper divergence which has the effect of giving extra "suck" aloft, to enhance vertical velocity and the development of rain in moist air.
By this morning, with the low down to 980hPa and positioned south of SA, widespread light to moderate rain was again spreading over SA, Victoria and Tasmania, whilst strong to galeforce winds were being experienced across both mainland states.
