The railroad was promised land grants along its line, provided that it be built to Bartow by January 1, 1884, and Tampa by January 1, 1885 or connected with another railroad for that purpose.
Henck of Longwood, Florida stood up and announced that if he and his fledging South Florida Railroad was given their State Charter along with its generous land grants he would push the railroad through from Sanford to Orlando in time to save the project.
The South Florida RR was incorporated on October 16, 1878 by Henck, E.F. Crafts, H. Mercer, and Dr. C.C. Haskell, all of Orange County, Florida.

The South Florida Railroad was incorporated on October 16, 1878, but was unable to obtain a charter until December 9, 1879, when they took over the charter of the Lake Monroe and Orlando, which was in danger of losing its land grants.
Specifically, the Florida Southern would not built any lines south of Pemberton's Ferry and Brooksville or north of Bartow, and the South Florida would build their Pemberton Ferry Branch between the two and assign trackage rights to the Florida Southern.
The South Florida leased it in 1883, and it was standard gauged on September 21, 1886.

The Florida Southern was given territory south of Bartow to Charlotte Harbor and North of Pemberton’s Ferry to Gainesville in which Plant and his South Florida RR promised not to invade these regions if the Florida Southern gave up its designs on Tampa Bay.
To comply with the terms of the agreement between the South Florida and the Florida Southern, the South Florida finished the construction of the 57 mile Pemberton’s Ferry Branch in May of 1886.

The railroad’s promoters could not raise the cash needed to start construction and they called what they thought would be their last meeting in November of 1879.
Henck was made president of the railroad and on his way back to Florida he stopped in Pittsburgh, PA to purchase ten miles of thirty-pound rail and a little narrow gauge locomotive from Porter on November 12, 1879.
But by then the South Florida’s supply of rails had been exhausted and because of the railroad building boom in the country there would be a three-month lull in completing the road to Orlando.

The land on the south side of Lake Monroe, the future site of Sanford, was the northern edge of a large parcel of one of these grants that, by the time of the American Civil War, had come into the possession of the Confederate General Joseph Finnegan.
The rivers of Florida were the only ways to get around the rugged, swampy interior of Central Florida and allowed lumber and produce to be sent to Jacksonville on barges.
The first railroad in the area around Sanford was the South Florida Railroad from Longwood to Sanford in 1880.

Currently, under the South Florida Initiative of the Ecosystem Program, scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey are studying the paleoecologic changes taking place in Florida Bay in hopes of understanding the physical environment and restoring the region to a a more pristine, natural state.
Cores collected from Florida Bay are first sampled for pollen, dinoflagellates and diatoms, washed through a seive stack to remove fine-grained mud, and analyzed for bottom-dwelling, or benthic, organisms, such as mollusks, foraminifera, and ostracodes.
The railroad, built between 1905 and 1912, has significantly impacted Florida Bay by cutting off the flow of water between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.
