 Lighthouses of England's Channel Coast
This page includes lighthouses along the south coast of England, from the Scilly Isles in the far southwest to the South Foreland at the eastern end of the Strait of Dover.
The Bill of Portland is a sharp cape at the south end of a peninsula, joined to the mainland by a narrow isthmus, and with very dangerous shoals offshore.
The South Foreland is not a prominent cape, but it is the southeasternmost corner of Britain and the eastern entrance to the Strait of Dover.

It is now owned by the Trust and open to visitors.
The South Foreland Lighthouse was the recipient of the world's first ship-to-shore transmission on Christmas Eve, 1898, from the East Goodwin lightship, which later proved its use when it alerted the lifeboats at Ramsgate to a ship in distress - the first time a lifeboat was alerted by telegraph.
Again in 1899 the lighthouse set another first when it exchanged wireless messages across the Channel to Wimereux near Boulogne.

There have been lighthouses on the South Foreland since mediaeval times, and, by having two lights, both on the cliff-top, but one higher than the other, mariners were assured of a safe passage past the southern end of the notorious Goodwin Sands if they kept the two lights in line.
The present lighthouses date from 1843, built in a distinctive castellated style.
