The German customs union was established in 1834 and by 1857 monetary union was also achieved (a dual currency system based on the North German Thaler and the South German Gulden irrevocably fixed at a rate of 1:1.75).
In the past the economic benefits of monetary union have often been recognized, and there were attempts to achieve currency unions in ancient Greece as well as in the Middle Ages.
The union, based on a bimetallic standard (whereby gold and silver were fixed against each other at a rate of 15.5:1) was formalized in 1865.
