North Lawndale (also known simply as "Lawndale") is a community area located on the west side of Chicago, Illinois.
David K. Fremon (1998) [1] calls North Lawndale "the embodiment of the urban fl ghetto." From about 1900 to 1950, he says, Russian Jews dominated the neighborhood, starting in North Lawndale and moving northward as they became more prosperous.

The West Rogers Park/Peterson Park survey is an outgrowth of a larger study of ethnic and racial communities in the city of Chicago.
In 2002, Sinai Urban Health Institute, under a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, surveyed six different communities in Chicago–North Lawndale, South Lawndale, Norwood Park, Roseland, West Town, and Humboldt Park–seeking information about health at the community level in order to refocus programs and resources to help eliminate racial and ethnic disparities.
After the preliminary results of this project, Catalyzing Public Policy to Improve Community Health, were released in 2003, the Jewish Federation partnered with Sinai to conduct a survey of its own and compare health statistics of the Jewish community with those of the other six communities.
