The South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) is an inter-governmental regional organisation dedicated to providing services to promote sustainable development in the countries it serves.
SOPAC is a member of the Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific.
Reducing Vulnerabilities in Pacific ACP states This project based on 3 components, Water, Risks and Aggregate, is also providing assistance in Bathymetry mapping, Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System and the installation of open source web based map servers for 14 Pacific Islands Countries.

Ten Member Governments of the South Pacific Forum took a significant step in 1977 in establishing this regional shipping venture as a means of providing adequate and reliable shipping services, thereby encouraging economic development in the region.

ASEAN, the Association of South East Asian Nations, was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the Bangkok Declaration by the five original member countries, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
The oldest of the inter-government regional organisations, the South Pacific Commission (SPC) was founded on 6 February 1947 by an agreement known as the Canberra Agreement, by the Governments of Australia, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
The Commission is a non-political organisation and exists purely to provide assistance to the countries of the region within its annual work programme, with emphasis on activities conducted in rural areas and at grassroots level.

The organisers of this meeting, the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission, the South Pacific Environment Programme and the UNEP GPA Coordination Office, brought together representatives and experts from the countries of the South Pacific Regional Sea, covering a wide geographical area with mainly small island communities.
The Pacific Wastewater Framework for Action comprises a list of proposed actions to be undertaken at national and regional levels to achieve the goals that are laid out in the Pacific Wastewater Policy Statement, in which reference is being made to the GPA-framework.
Scattered throughout the Pacific are over 30,000 small islands and a number of larger islands (each over 2000 km2 in area) that emerge from the sea floor of which about 1,000 islands are inhabited.

The representative of SOPAC informed the meeting of the work programme areas of the Commission which relate to the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors.
At the 1995 South Pacific Forum Heads of Governments meeting, SOPAC was directed to assume responsibility for regional coordination for disaster management and is currently working with all interested parties, particularly the UNDHA South Pacific Program Office, which at present implements a UNDP regional disaster project.
SOPAC is currently involved, together with other South Pacific Organizations Coordination Committee agencies, in the Regional Strategy exercise, being coordinated by the Forum Secretariat.

 PacGOOS
The Pacific Islands Global Ocean Observing System [PI-GOOS[1]] Global Regional Alliance [GRA] was established in 1998 at the Pacific Regional GOOS Capacity Building Workshop, which convened in Suva, Fiji in 1998.
The South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission [SOPAC] was identified as the interim secretariat for PI-GOOS at the same workshop.
The PacificGOOS ad hoc Steering Committee at its meeting in October 2002 agreed that it was prudent to change the name of the regional alliance to Pacific Islands GOOS (PI-GOOS) to dispel uncertainty in terms of the geographic coverage of the membership of the alliance.

It is a formal marine information networking system (of regional institutions and Pacific Island countries) devoted to the collection, storage, retrieval, and dissemination of information on fisheries and other living and non-living marine resources in the tropical Pacific.
The Pacific Islands Marine Resources Information System (PIMRIS) was established in recognition of the fact that a marine resources information system in the South Pacific is a crucial factor in providing access to information in the Region.
PIMRIS has three additional participants : the Forum Fisheries Agency, the South Pacific Commission and the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission.
