 Pacific Community
On 6 December 1999 during its conference in Papeete, French Polynesia, the Pacific Community, formerly the South Pacific Commission (SPC), adopted a new flag (sometimes described as the flag of the Pacific Community, at other times described as the flag of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community).
The first flag of the South Pacific Commission was blue with a white ring, the lower right part of which is replaced by a chain of small gold stars.
Pavillons nationaux et marques distinctives also shows the flag of the South Pacific Forum (what is it?): a 1:2 dark blue flag with a white canton (1/4 th of the flag) with the Forum emblem.

 South Pacific Commission -- 1988
The South Pacific Commission was established in 1947 by an agreement signed in Canberra, Australia, known as the Canberra Agreement, by the Governments of Australia, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.
The SPC emblem, designed in New Caledonia, was officially adopted on 6 February 1970 on the occasion of the twenty-third anniversary of the South Pacific Commission.
The South Pacific Commission serves as the implementing agency for SPREP, with a Co-ordinating Group consisting of SPEC (the South Pacific Bureau for Economic Co-operation), SPC, ESCAP (the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific), and UNEP (the United Nations Environment Programme).

The Commission shall be a consultative and advisory body to the participating Governments in matters affecting the economic and social development of the non-self-governing territories within the scope of the Commission and the welfare and advancement of their peoples.
In order to associate with the work of the Commission representatives of the local inhabitants of, and of official and non-official institutions directly concerned with, the territories within the scope of the Commission, there shall be established a South Pacific Conference with advisory powers as a body auxiliary to the Commission.

The theme "The South Pacific Commission and the region -the next 50 years" recognises this fact and I welcome therefore this opportunity to contribute to the discussion on this historical day.
A few months ago in a Conference held at the University of the South Pacific, I said that small island countries are particularly vulnerable to environmental and economic problems that have the potential to undermine their political stability and the long term survival of their distinct societies.
I am pleased that the South Pacific Organisations Coordinating Committee (SPOCC) is working well with active participation by all regional organisations to ensure that initiatives in various sectors are well coordinated and that a balanced development approach is promoted through the Regional Strategy.

 The Whitlam Institute: The Whitlam Collection: Australia proposes changes to South Pacific Commission
These were outlined in an address to the South Pacific Conference in Guam yesterday by Australia’s Special Minister of State, Senator Willesee, who is leader of the Australian delegation to the conference.
Senator Willesee proposed that from 1975 there should be a de facto merger of the South Pacific Commission and the Conference sessions.
It saw the Pacific world was divided between controlling metropolitan powers and their subject colonies, and had not even foreshadowed the possibility of any of those colonies becoming independent and hence members of the Commission.

 Participation of Women in the South Pacific
In addition to the recommendations that came out of the workshops, the Conference was worthwhile in providing opportunity for sharing valuable information, and for developing further the process of networking in the Pacific between governments and non-governmental organizations, in relation to women's activities.
Bahá'í communities in the Pacific region, most of them at grass roots, are currently engaged in such a process of integrating women into all aspects of community life and decision-making.
We extend to SPC - as we have in the past - in the spirit of warm cooperation, the experience and assistance of Bahá'í communities throughout the Pacific in achieving a better quality of life for the peoples in the region.

The South Pacific Trade Commission office in Auckland, New Zealand says it will again target export development and investment promotion this year, as part of its trade promotion activities for Forum Island Countries.
The trade commission is one of four administered by the Suva-based Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, with others based in Sydney, Tokyo and Beijing.
Trade commission staff will visit eight of the 14 Forum Island Countries this year to promote the trade and investment service offered by the trade commission, and to obtain more feedback from members regarding their interests.

At the South Pacific Commission he was able to utilize and further this broad acquaintance with the literature (and his growing belief in the need for a more island-oriented historiography) with a program to locate and microfilm manuscripts, and to publicise these in the Commissions’s Quarterly Bulletin.
While at the South Pacific Commission Maude was approached by Professor Jim Davidson to join the recently created Research School of Pacific Studies at the Australian National University.
He was also responsible for the foundation of the Pacific Microfilm Bureau, devoted to the location and filming of unique manuscripts on the islands, and for the ANU Press Pacific Monographs series of bibliographies of sources relevant to the study of Pacific history.
