South Pole - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ceremonial South Pole is an area set aside for photo opportunities at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.
The Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station was established during the International Geophysical Year in 1958 and is permanently staffed by research and support personnel.
The south pole of a magnet is attracted to the north poles of other magnets, hence the south pole of a freely suspended magnet (as in a compass) will point towards the Geomagnetic South Pole.

The new station is elevated above the snow to prevent it being buried by the drifting snow (the present fate of the old domed station).
The new station, presently under construction, can be seen to the right in the photo; the old (circa 1973) domed station is to the left.
When the new station is finished in about 2006, the old dome and buildings inside will be removed.

 New South Pole Station
At right is a closeup view of the main part of the station showing the new structures (unlike the site plan, this view is inverted with grid south at the top).
This was literally a "last-minute" problem, as at the scheduled time for station closing, the fire system tech reps had to be called back from McMurdo (where they were awaiting their CHC flight) and the cargoids in McM had to dig out and ship replacement parts cannibalized from the B pod fire alarm sytem.
Fortunately, a detailed analysis of the station settlement data pointed to construction issues 9such as point overloading caused by the temporary snow ramps which provided access to the construction areas) rather than problems with the original foundation design; now the general consensus is that the station foundations will perform satisfactorily over the long term.

Your Stay at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station Antarctica
The South Pole Station is situated at 90 degrees South on the Polar Plateau.
The station was originally constructed 400 meters from the geographic South Pole; however, ice movement, at the rate of 10 meters per year, will eventually carry the station over the actual Pole.
Confirmation or revision to plans should be provided to the South Pole Station Manager at least two weeks in advance of departure so that the Chalet may be informed and your departure scheduled.

The Antarctic Sun: New South Pole station
The new South Pole elevated station, scheduled for completion in 2007.
But designers of the new station took pains to make sure some vital parts of South Pole culture are preserved.
This season’s winter staff is scheduled to be the first to inhabit the Pole’s new elevated station, as the dining hall and one set of dorms is considered complete enough for use.

The U.S. station at the South Pole gets around this to some extent by using older geostationary satellites that are no longer in perfect orbits, but that swing north and south of the equator.
People at the the South Pole Station refer to a satellite being "up," which means they can communicate.
This means it covers the ocean from the North Pole to Alaska's northern coast, about 1,300 miles from the Pole, and to the northern coast of Russia and Europe, very roughly the same distance as from the Pole to Alaska.

Air Guard retraces first flight to South Pole
South Pole crews unloaded the sleds and the fuel.
The sled frames were headed for the South Pole to pull heavy drilling equipment into place for the IceCube project, which is creating the world’s largest neutrino detector by implanting instruments deep into the ice.
From a higher altitude of 17,500 feet, even the heavy tractors and trailers of a team investigating the possibility of supplying the South Pole by land were a mere blip on the radar screen.

Articles - Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station
The original South Pole station, now referred to as "Old Pole", was constructed by an eighteen man Navy crew during 1956–1957.
Beginning in 1999/2000, the New York Air National Guard's 109th Airlift Wing took responsibility for the daily cargo and PAX flights between the McMurdo Station and the South Pole during the summer.
Since the winter conditions at the South Pole had never been measured, the station was built partially underground in order to protect it from the worst imaginable weather.

 Observatory Operations: SPO
The South Pole Observatory (SPO) is one of four atmospheric baseline observatories for NOAA's Climate Monitoring and Diagnositics Laboratory (CMDL).
The South Pole Observatory was established at the geographical south pole at 2837 m above sea level in 1957 as part of the International Geophysical Year.
Located at the South Pole, Antarctica covers 5.5 million square miles (14.2 square kilometers) and with over 95% of its surface area covered by ice it generates the coldest climate on Earth.

 South Pole, 2002
We had reports that a Russian Political Giant, (Artur N Chilingarov), was going to fly his personal Bi-Plane to the South Pole, under the guise of coming to look at the construction currently being built for New South Pole Station, with the hopes of rebuilding the failing Russian Antarctic Station, Vostok.

Scientific Expedition Introduction South Pole Station
Situated on a plateau of ice 9,000 feet (2,700 m) thick, the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station is about 1,000 feet (300 m) upstream from the geographic south pole and is drifting with the ice sheet toward the pole at a rate of 33 feet (10 m) per year.
The station is named after Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and Englishman Robert F. Scott who led independent expeditions to the south pole in the early 1900's.
The high altitude and dry air make for extremely clear skies so that the view through a telescope at the south pole is better than anywhere else on Earth.

South Pole 'cyberterrorist' hack wasn't the first The Register
On May 3rd, network administrators for US Antarctic Program and the South Pole Station received an anonymous e-mail with the subject line "South Pole Station Servers HACKED." "This is a message from earth to earth, do you copy?," the -mail began.
"This aligns the security posture at South Pole with the other stations," he wrote.
That account - which has since been scrubbed from the FBI's website - underscored the importance of the Internet to scientists living at the South Pole station, describing connectivity as "a lifeline" to the outside world.

Case Study of Hawaii Architects Ferraro Choi And Associates: Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica
The habitat at the existing 1975 Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station is constructed inside a 50-meter diameter geodesic dome that becomes mostly buried each austral winter by the constant snowdrifts.
A precursor to the current dome, the original 1956 South Pole Station suffered the same fate of snow buildup and has long since vanished under 30 feet of ice.
