The river was an important transportation route throughout much of the early history of the state, furnishing a means of conveying the vast timber and agricultural resources of the state to the outside world.
The Willamette rises in three separate forks in the mountains south and southeast of Eugene, at the southern end of the Willamette Valley.
From Eugene, the combined river flows NNW across the plain of the southern Willamette Valley to Corvallis, then follows a zigzag course past Albany and around the isolated hills in the central valley, passing west of downtown Salem.

The Middle Santiam River is a tributary of the South Santiam River, approximately 35 mi (56 km) long, in western Oregon in the United States.
It drains a remote area of the Cascade Range east of Corvallis in the watershed of the Willamette River.
In central Linn County it is impounded at the Green Peter Dam to form the Green Peter Lake reservoir.

he North Santiam River, situated east of Salem, Oregon, originates in the western slope of the Eastern Cascade Mountains at Mount Jefferson and extends westward to the confluence of the Willamette River.
The North Santiam and its tributaries are used for agriculture, irrigation, recreation and the drinking water supply to watershed residents and the City of Salem.
The North Santiam river is listed on the 303(d) list of water quality limited water bodies for water temperature by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) under the Clean Water Act.

We were looking for a section of river that offered some moving water, chutes, small waves, and tame eddies that a beginner would not find too intimidating.
There was a little brush in the water but all of these "river trees" were easily avoided.

Unlike the pioneer wagon roads that were developed to bring emigrants into the Willamette Valley, the Santiam Wagon Road was built from west to east to move livestock over the Cascade Mountains to central Oregon's grass lands and to provide access to markets in eastern Oregon and Idaho.
Operating as a toll road until 1914, the Santiam Wagon Road was a maintained route that included bridges, road houses, and toll gates.

Fish concerns also had to be addressed for the Albany-Millersburg Joint Water Project, a $30 million project initiated in 2001 to increase the supply of drinking water from the Santiam River for the two cities.

Moose Creek, which flows through the area, is eligible for wild and scenic river designation and provides habitat for imperiled wild winter steelhead and spring chinook salmon.

SWEET HOME — Projections for a proposed $700 million Black Butte-type development along the banks of the South Santiam River claim that when completed in about 10 years, the city of Sweet Home, the Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District and Sweet Home School District will share an additional $10 million dollars in property taxes.
The Santiam River Club, will be a combination of upscale homes in a gated community, moderately priced condominiums and retirement homes closer to town, as well as a number of commercial ventures such as hotels, restaurants and an artisans village.
The 752-acre project, which will include 1,575 housing units, will stretch from Ames Creek on the east to 18th Avenue on the west, and from the Santiam River on the north to Highway 20 on the south and encompass former mill sites and undeveloped land.

Lane's Trail and the Underground Railway In the wintry twilight of a January day in 1859, a small caravan of wagons occupied by 30 or 40 escaped slaves approached a log cabin dwelling in the southwest corner of Brown County, Kansas.
The Old Santiam Wagon Road On September 5, 1859 a party hardy explorers followed the course of the South Santiam River in an effort to locate a route over the Cascade Mountains to central Oregon.
The Willamette Valley and Cascade Mountain Road Cattle had become so numerous by 1859 that there was not enough grazing land in Willamette Valley and a route to central Oregon grasslands became urgent for summer grazing and for markets.
