South Shields is a coastal town in South Tyneside, Tyne and Wear, England on the south bank of the mouth of the River Tyne, with a population of about 90,000.
South Shields has six miles of coastline and three miles of river frontage, dominated by the massive piers at the mouth of the Tyne.
South Shields was able to elect an MP after the Great Reform Act of 1832 and was incorporated as a municipal borough in 1850 under the Municipal Corporations Act 1835.

South Shields is a canny auld town on the River Tyne, and it suddenly occurred to me that there must be many folk out there who have moved away and might be curious as to how the town is getting on today in the new Millennium and also how it was those many years ago.
I have been out and about taking pictures of the town, just like the revered Amy Flagg, who in the 1930`s spent a lot of time taking pictures of the town ~ we owe a lot to her.
We also owe a lot to Photographer James Cleet who took a lot of photographs during the 1930's for South Shields Council, prior to the demolition of large areas of the old town.

The current South Shields Photographic Society was founded in 1913, although we do know of the existence of a former society of the same name that was founded in 1894 that ceased to function shortly after 1909 due to the lack of support and the dearth of new members.
In September 1913 the Northern Counties Photographic Federation organised a print exhibition that was to be the first official English Federation Exhibition held, since the days of the Yorkshire Federation so many years before.
The exhibition was held in the towns library during September and drew some 20,000 visitors during the four weeks it was on display, such was its success it sparked renewed interest in the art that a new South Shields Photographic Society was formed.
