South Shore is home to the South Shore Cultural Center, Rainbow Beach (one of the more popular beach spots in Chicago), and has one of few retail districts on the south side.
Jackson Park is a 500 acre (2 km²) park on Chicago's South Side, bordering Lake Michigan and the neighborhoods of Hyde Park and Woodlawn.

The South Shore Line is an electrically powered interurban streetcar line operated by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) between Randolph Street Terminal in downtown Chicago, Illinois and the South Bend Regional Airport in South Bend, Indiana.
On September 16, 1956 a street-running section in East Chicago was removed with the building of a new alignment next to the Indiana Toll Road.
In November 1992 an extension was built from the old South Bend terminal at the Amtrak station to the South Bend Regional Airport.

A 1939 description of South Shore stating that it was “predominately middle class—upper middle class, to be sure, but not social register,” offers an apt though antiquated characterization of this South Side community.
The area, bounded by 67th and 79th Streets to the north and south and by Stony Island Avenue and Lake Michigan to the east and west, was mostly swampland in the 1850s when Ferdinand Rohn, a German truck farmer, utilized trails along the area's high ground to transport his goods to Chicago.
Before the community came to be known as South Shore in the 1920s, it was a collection of settlements in southern Hyde Park Township.

The magnificent strength of the steel industry built the region, yet the factories along the South Shore Line are increasingly underutilized; the area has become known as the “Rust Belt,” a symbol of the disintegration of the steel mills along the lake.
The South Shore has a long way to go; crime is rampant and the infrastructure of many of these communities has faltered.

The Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad electric commuter trains between South Bend, Indiana and Chicago are operated by Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) and Metra.
They provide an excellent alternative to driving into Chicago (and then finding a place to park); service is frequent, reliable and on-time, and the trains are clean and restroom-equipped.
The South Shore acquired it when Indiana Railroad shut down in 1941, and converted it to a line car in 1947.

The Center sits on roughly 60 acres of land that is bounded by South Shore Drive on the west, 71st Street on the south, and Lake Michigan on the north and east.
In 1916, after the membership expanded and the building became socially important, the old clubhouse was moved to the south section of the grounds and became the golf club (no longer in existence.) For decades the South Shore Country Club was a playground for Chicago's rich and famous.
The Advisory Council at the South Shore Cultural Center was formed in the summer of 1986.

In 1904, the streetcar line was renamed "The Chicago, Lake Shore and South Bend Railway" to reflect its founders' vision of an ambitious plan for expansion and growth.
This was an important change, for new South Shore trains could operate directly and continuously over the trackage of the Illinois Central Railroad from Kensington to downtown Chicago, helping assure the South Shore's long term survival.
The South Shore, locked into a mobility pattern of dense urban development, could not compete with the new pattern of suburban growth and began a long period of ridership decline.

The Commission proposed that they and the South Shore join in joint construction of their two routes utilizing the right-of-way already acquired by the railroad, an arrangement that was to prove mutually advantageous.
Also, because the South Shore was independent it was unable to guarantee a large car supply to Bethlehem Steel who in turn refused to grant the line access to its Burns Harbor plant so long as it remained an independent road.
The primary reason for the South Shore’s affiliation with a larger carrier was to increase its competitive position for freight traffic in the face of continuing mergers in the East, and to assure a supply of cars that would permit the line to effectively serve the new Bethlehem Steel plant.

The East Chicago section was eliminated by a new route alongside the Indiana Toll Road in 1956, and the South Bend section was eliminated when the eastern end of the line was cut back to the outskirts of the city in 1970.
From 1970 until 1992, the eastern end of the line was in the outskirts of South Bend, at a shabby concrete-block station shared with Amtrak, which uses a parallel freight line through South Bend.
The South Shore station is attached to the end of the airport terminal building, and part of the airport parking lot is set aside for railroad passengers.

Today the Chicago SouthShore and South Bend Railroad is a short line freight carrier, with headquarters located in Michigan City.  Passenger service over the line is provided by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) and is not affiliated with the Chicago SouthShore.
Passenger service between Gary and Chicago is now a suburban commuter railroad.  In Michigan City, trains still run down the middle of 10th and 11th Streets, and passengers still board electric interurban trains streetcar-style, the only place in the United States where this is still done.
The eastern section of the line running from Michigan City to South Bend still has much of the flavor of the old rural Midwestern interurbans: a single-track line through meadows and cornfields.

Recognizing that his Plan of Chicago had to reflect the social reform movement of the time, Burnham based many of its principles on English town-planning laws: the plan therefore included provisions for public schools with ample playgrounds, public libraries, suitable housing with proper sanitation, air and sunlight, and facilities for outdoor recreation.
Lakefront improvements were divided between the South Park Commission, which would oversee the transformation from the Chicago River south to Jackson Park, and the Lincoln Park Board, which was responsible for the area north of the River to Wilmette.
The South Park District issued $43,000,000 in bonds and the Lincoln Park District issued $4,500,000 to reinforce the importance of the lakefront in relation to improved public health, pleasure and recreational facilities.

Originally built in 1906 to house the uber-exclusive South Shore Country Club, the South Shore Cultural Center was rescued from demolition by ardent community members in the early 1970s and bought by the Chicago Park District in 1975.
The buildings are visually spectacular, utilizing both the glamorous "resort" architectural style common in Florida and California and the Classical Revival and Adamesque style, heavy with stucco and plaster ornamentation, which restoration crews were instructed to maintain.
The elegant plot of land that houses the SSCC buildings includes a club building, gatehouse and stable, in addition to a nine-hole golf course, tennis courts and bird-friendly nature sanctuary on the small peninsula behind the buildings.
