Huguenot, Staten Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Originally named Bloomingview, its present name is derived from the French Huguenots, many of whom came to Staten Island in the 18th Century to escape religious persecution.
The community gained a station along the Staten Island Railway soon after the line was extended to Tottenville in 1860.
The first visible sign of this transformation, however, came not in the form of new home construction, but rather with the building of the new Tottenville High School campus, which opened in 1972 in Huguenot (the existing high school buildings in Tottenville were converted into a junior high school).

 Urban Dictionary: staten island
The South shore and mid-island are heavily republican while the North shore has been said to have more in common with parts of Brooklyn and Queens then it does with the rest of Staten Island.
While the South shore is filled with mostly middle-upper middle class families living in areas that would be considered suburbs, the North shore is filled with mostly low-income urban areas that are home to mostly fls and hispanics.
The Staten Island Railroad was even called the "Mason-Dixon Line" due to the fact that the overwhelming majority of the borough's minorities live above it on the island's North shore, and due to hate crimes that were being commited in Staten Island's Mid-land and southern areas.

The Shore Front Drive was part of Robert Moses' ultimate plan for a shorefront parkway route from Staten Island to the Hamptons, a goal that had been sought since he first became chairman of the New York State Parks Department in the 1920's under Governor Alfred E. Smith.
The proposed route, which was to bring to fruition part of Robert Moses' long-desired shorefront parkway between Staten Island and Montauk Point, was advanced as a state-sponsored measure to control beach erosion and promote orderly development of adjacent properties.
In 1972, with the establishment of the Gateway National Recreation Area along the Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens shorelines, the Shore Front Drive was declared dead.

Unlike their socially defeated parents the youth of the South Shore demonstrated little regard for the rules much less even civil behavior as they engaged in a wall kicking contest and a paper airplane attack on a clearly annoyed 85 year-old grandmother.
In the end it was clear that the old stereotype was alive and well on the South Shore – male students were being systematically encouraged to achieve in the Sciences while females were left by the wayside.
If this little school in Staten Island was isolated from the rest of society the poetic justice approach would be imminently suitable.
