The constituency is dominated by Luton airport and the Vauxhall car plant, and it came as a major blow to the area when Vauxhall announced that they plan to close their plant by mid 2002 with the loss of 2,000 jobs.
Important towns in the rural South of the constituency are the county town of Dolgellau and the anglicised (and slightly run down) resort of Barmouth.

Jo Harrison, 53, had been due to stand in the Staffordshire South constituency and Staffordshire County Council elections on 5 May, but was found dead on 30 April at the home she shared with her daughter.
He said that tests on Mrs Harrison, a former parish councillor from Church View Gardens, in Kinver, Staffordshire, established she had 488mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood in her system.

For the first time in over 50 years, the election in a particular constituency was thus delayed, meaning that this is not technically a byelection but the final result of the general election.
