 South Wairarapa District Council
The South Wairarapa District Council is situated at the southern most corner of the North Island and has an area of approximately 248,455 hectares (2484 square kilometres).
In the south, the district boundary follows the coastline from the western end of Palliser Bay in Cook Strait to Honeycomb Rock, east of Martinborough.
The District includes the towns of Featherston, Greytown and Martinborough which are the main population centres.

Greytown Community Board has asked Wairarapa District Health Board for items, such as the centennial fountain, the flagpole, a memorial plaque, stained glass windows and century-old trees, to be preserved for the people of Greytown.
Greytown Lions have already been given permission to remove the fountain and the associated plaque and the health board has agreed that the flagpole, a noticeboard and the stained glass windows in the chapel be given to the community board for preservation.
South Wairarapa District councillor Mike Gray said part of the proceeds of the sale of former Greytown Hospital should also be set aside for the future health needs of residents.

Mr Tulloch said the council holds the golf club in trust for “the people of Martinborough and surrounding district”, as the land was given to a trust for a public reserve in 1913.
South Wairarapa District councillors asked whether the club could increase green fees for visitors from $20 to $21 or $22, but Mr Tulloch said this would create problems with change.
South Wairarapa District Council excluded the public while it considered the submission.

Already in 2005 the ambulance service in Martinborough has been involved in the lives of 37 people and the commitment of a dedicated group of volunteers is helping to ensure that this service is available to Martinborough and the South Wairarapa.
This was acknowledged by Mayor for South Wairarapa District Council, Adrienne Staples who highlighted that many community services in rural areas are provided by volunteers.
The efforts of the Martinborough District Ambulance Trust have seen them obtain funding from a variety of funders and successfully increase this funding through astute financial investments.

Waste Management Wairarapa (WMW) is a committee of the Masterton, Carterton and South Wairarapa District Councils, and includes non-voting representatives from local iwi and Greater Wellington Regional Council.
At present its powers are limited to advising the three district councils and acting upon their directions.
Waste Management Wairarapa also provides waste minimisation programmes targeted at the commercial sector, schools and the community.

The company behind a large housing development planned on Wairarapa's south coast at Tora has ditched mediation in favour of an Environment Court battle.
Martinborough Coastal Developments, owned by Auckland developer Ian Redshaw, got South Wairarapa District Council approval but for a smaller development with many conditions attached, including five conservation lots.
South Wairarapa Mayor Adrienne Staples said the applicants opted not to proceed with more mediation, but to go straight to the court, "where at this stage they will still be fighting us (the council) and the Te Awaiti landowners who lodged an appeal".

Heavy rain is causing widespread surface flooding throughout Wairarapa particularly in south eastern areas.
Heaviest rain is expected to be about the hills and ranges of Hawke’s Bay and the Tararua District including the Ruahines, where 70 to 100mm of rain is possible.
