On the Reading line (as with most of the network) SWT runs the “Slam Door” trains which were probably born in the 60s or 70s, these are not clean, smell strange and possibly pose a health hazard (okay that’s an exaggeration, and some of the slam door trains are acceptable).
SWT have promised that within the next few years, the Slam Door trains will be replaced by new trains, and I have seen them around on the line, and they do look quite good, problem is, all the other train companies seem to be running them already.
The train closes its doors and the teenage girl loudly says “this is all my fault sorry” and walks to the other end of the train, the inspector follows her.

What makes the situation worse is SWT's inability to communicate: not only with it's fare-paying customers but also with it's staff, and the result is a stress-filled start and end to the day for all concerned.
Suffice to say that a large percentage of the white-collar working population now travel out of town to work, and as Alton is at the end of the main line to London Waterloo, the rail service is the obvious transport choice for those commuters.
As we had arrived at the station early, it was suggested that we drive to Farnham to catch the 0809 which was known to be running.

This week's dealings with the staff on the privatised UK railway SWT ("South West Trains") has all kinds of resonances with Kafka, and also with the "Catch 22" situation.
The helpful person at SWT sympathised with the problem and suggested acquiring a "SWT photocard" which he said could easily be done by taking two passport sized personal photos of the youngster to any major station on the SWT network and filling in a form.
Meanwhile, the travel centre at the local SWT station was closed on the Saturday afternoon due to "staff shortages" and the ticket office at the next station down the line was boarded up and unattended.

Woking is one of the main stations as it is at the intersection before the train lines split to serve the West Country, Oxfordshire and Sussex and as such it benefits from a larger than average number of trains passing through the station.

I always know that the train is always late enough to have a fag before it arrives as 'for you comfort and safety' smoking is no longer permited on South West Trains.
An anouncement was made at 18:02 that the next train to arrive was ours, I made my way up the platform to join at the front of the train as I always do and as I turned to check the train was coming in, it shot past us.
May I also add that South West Train's announcement for their new timetable was made in total of 11 times whilst we were on the station, you would not believe how irritating this gets when you are WAITING FOR A TRAIN!

STAGECOACH subsidiary South West Trains has won a legal conflict that threatened to plunge its staff pension fund up to £36m into the red and almost treble its pension contributions.
South West, which was threatened with a £1m fine earlier this year after cancelling services, went to the High Court to resolve a dispute stemming from a new working practices deal announced in January.

The South West of France has basically two (connected) lines, one North/South starting from Paris and going through Bordeaux via Bayonne to Spain, and an East/West route from Bayonne through Pau to the Mediterranean.
