The Isle of Wight, along with the adjoining regions of Hampshire and Kent, was invaded and settled in the late fourth century onwards by the Jutes, who (some believe) became victims of a policy of ethnic cleansing by the West Saxons.
The West Wight is predominently rural, with dramatic coastlines dominated by the famous chalk downland ridge, running across the whole Island and ending in The Needles stacks - perhaps the most photographed aspect of the Isle of Wight.

South Wight was a borough on the Isle of Wight, created in the local government reform of 1974, alongside the Medina borough which covered the north of the island.
It was effectively abolished on April 1, 1995 when the borough councils were merged with the county council to form a single unitary authority, the Isle of Wight Council.

South Wight Housing Association merged with the Isle of Wight Housing Association (IWHA) on 3 October 2005 to form the largest housing association on the Island.
It was first established as a Large Scale Voluntary Association in 1990, its properties include general housing for families, sheltered schemes for older people, homeless accommodation, a women's refuge, supported housing for people recovering from substance abuse and homes for people with learning disabilities.
South Wight Housing Association is a wholly owned subsidary of Southern Housing Group following the merger of the two organisations in July 2002.
