Exeter Central is the latest layout to be built by the N-Gauge Section of the Southampton Model Railway Society.
The Southern Railway was therefore forced to rebuild completely the whole complex, and on completion, the station was renamed Exeter Central.
Although Exeter was an important city and port in itself, the main aim of the London and South Western Railway in coming to Exeter was as part of a through route to the major port of Plymouth and its important passenger and mail traffic, in direct opposition to the Great Western Railway.
