  Tackling youth conflict in Southampton: CRE Safe Communities Initiative case study   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
The Southampton conference was one of a series run by the Safe Communities Initiative (SCI) as part of their 'youth' work theme; other conferences were held in London and Birmingham.
SCI decided to run a conference in Southampton after they were approached by a local agency - Western Challenge Housing Association - which was concerned about recent incidents of conflict between groups of young people in the city.
SCI also held an evaluation session with Southampton City Council, Hampshire Police, Crime Concern and the Western Challenge Housing Association to discuss how conference had gone and to hand responsibility over to local agencies.

The Unitary Authority of Southampton is located in the County of Hampshire in The Southern Counties of England, it covers an administrative area of 50Km² and in 2001 was home to a population of 217,445 persons, that represents 0.44% of that of England and 0.37% of the population of the entire United Kingdom.
The traveller arriving at Southampton has no such devastating vision awaiting him, but still the “scenery” of the town and its docks is not such as to invite comment, much less praise.
They appear to date from Norman times, though one well-known section, popularly known as the “Arcades,” are an interesting reminder of the modernisation of the fortifications after the terrible raid of 1338, when the French and their allies burnt and sacked the town, and many of its citizens fell in a bloody massacre.

Planning for the provision of a new control centre was slow with suggestions that a new centre be built under the police station and magistrates court wing, or under the south-east wing of the Civic Centre, or that various basement offices within the Civic Centre be adapted.
On the eastern side of the City it was decided that a new sub-control would be built on land adjacent the junction of Somerset Avenue and Bitterne Road.
The bunker is located on the northern edge of the city in Bassett Green Road adjacent to the M27.

This was the first time the City's Administration had changed for 19 years, and the first time a party with 'Liberal' in its name had led the City since before the First World War.
They successfully ran the council for four years until the local elections in 2007.
When the Liberal Democrats formed the adminstration on Southampton City Council, they had a difficult task given the political split and the fact they did not have a majority but one we were please to do for the good of the people of Southampton.
