Southampton Solent University is one of the UKandrsquo;s newest universities, having become a university as recently as July 2005 and changed our name on 15 August.
Southampton Solent University was formed as Southampton Institute in 1984 from an amalgamation of the then Southampton College of Higher Education with the College of Nautical Studies, located at Warsash.
The College of Higher Education had in turn been formed in 1974 from a merger of Southampton College of Technology with Southampton College of Art.

Vincent Henry, a longtime resident of Southampton, a 21 year veteran of the New York City Police Department and the first New York City policeman ever to be awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, has created the Homeland Security Management Institute as part of the newly reconfigured graduate school being run by Long Island University’s Southampton College.
Southampton College won’t just be resurrected: there’s reason to be optimistic that it will be revived.
Southampton students weren’t happy with the forced move and the students welcomed having the 40 all together to form a quasi-community.

Daniel Rodas, 39, took over the post of provost at Southampton College on May 1 and is leading the college’s $60 million renaissance to transforming the college into “an institution of the 21st Century” in all aspects of college life.
Southampton College is a Division II school and due to lack of funding from the institution, the athletic program has very little money to offer in scholarships, making it difficult for the school to draw top-notch athletic ability.
The athletic facilities at the college are also in need of a facelift and a $13 million, 65,000-square-foot athletic and recreation facility is in the future for the college.

Southampton College Marine Science Professor Christopher Gobler has discovered a phenomenon that may shed light on why destructive algal blooms known as brown tides have repeatedly plagued the estuaries on the east end and south shore of Long Island.
The results are based on research that Dr. Gobler conducted with his marine science students from Southampton College of Long Island University in Great South Bay during the fall and winter of 1999.
Gobler, an assistant professor of Marine Science at Southampton College of Long Island University, was recently appointed faculty coordinator of the college's internationally recognized Marine Science program.

Southampton Town Supervisor Patrick "Skip" Heaney announced plans to issue a nine month moratorium on subdivision for the area surrounding the college while zoning issues are addressed by a consultant.
And the group "Save the College at Southampton," which recently became a not-for-profit corporation, announced potential plans to pursue a lawsuit against the LIU board alleging fiscal irresponsibility.
